Cottony, homey, dark, and it’s a blessed reprieve from whatever daylight had been streaming in from his window as he’d started to open up his eyes a moment before. Sounds are a background accompaniment to the rolling parade of thoughts in his head, shifting around the room and melting like butter as tiny hands prod at his shoulders and another voice quietly tries to scold. Key word: tries.
“Tommy,” Phil finally says, pushing his face deeper into the pillow and ignoring how it muffles his voice more. “Bug off.”

Tommy pressed on the gas, the buildings and street lights becoming nothing but a colorful blur as he raced past them, a grin painted on his face. The engine thrummed beneath him, almost comforting as he sped past the brick buildings. It had been four months since Tommy had been in the driver's seat of a car, but he remembered everything. The mold of the steering wheel against his hand, the recline of his seat, the glint in his eye, reflected in the mirror, everything.
Tommy Innit has been street racing for months.
But finding time to race is hard when you’re a foster kid, and it’s even harder when you’re in the hospital for four weeks. So as soon as Tommy gets discharged, he’s itching to get back into the racing scene. Unfortunately, things are made a lot harder when he’s forced into a new family that wasn’t even expecting his arrival.
Wilbur hates him, Techno’s apathetic at best, and Phil cares way too much.
Tommy has his fair share of skeletons in his closet, and it seems like his old life is colliding into his new one, and it isn’t going to be pretty.

They’re halfway across the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge, under the indigo blanket of twilight, when Raph realizes Casey has been very quiet.
As a matter of fact, he hasn’t heard Casey say a word since the kid was crying on the comms, begging Leo not to go away.
He glances over his shoulder at the back row of seats. Casey is sitting on April’s other side, hunched forward, arms wrapped around himself as if he’s staving off the cold. His eyes are glassy and freshly traumatized and Raph realizes he’s let something pretty important slip.
