Summary
“Buck?” Eddie’s voice is quiet as he sees Buck’s form on the large bed, curled onto the side, head facing away from the door.
He seems to be asleep, but Eddie feels the hair on his arms stand on end all of a sudden. Something doesn’t seem right.
Buck snores when he is sleeping. Even when just on the couch in the fire station, you can always hear Buck’s soft snoring.
There’s no sound coming from his friend. None.
Eddie takes more steps into the room, crossing over to the bed. Buck is eerily still on his mattress, the sheets trapped underneath his muscular body.
“Buck?”
Eddie realizes three things at exactly the same moment: 1) Buck is out like a light, 2) he is barely breathing, 3) there’s a half empty bottle of pills on the pillow next to him.
“Shit!”
Or:
Eddie knows that Buck isn't doing okay, no matter what Buck tells him. He just hopes Buck will come to him before shit will inevitably hit the proverbial fan.
He doesn’t, and Eddie is left to pick up the pieces.

“Buck, I escaped the hospital with broken ribs and a fucked up shoulder to go and find you” Eddie’s voice is hard, but he needs Buck to understand. “I rode a fucking horse back to the diner for you. I hot-wired that shit car that’s waiting for us outside for you. I would’ve… Buck I was ready to kill Bonnie. To get to you.”
Buck is silent where he is sitting on the bed across from him, his eyes wide as saucers. Their hands are still tangled, and this time it’s Buck who squeezes Eddie’s fingers tightly, as if to anchor them to each other.
“You would’ve… Eddie…” Buck’s voice falters. He looks down at their joined hands for a moment, then back up, fixing Eddie’s gaze with his own.
“Why?”
Or: An overnight stop on their final leg home from Nashville reveals all Buck and Eddie were willing to do to safe the other. And maybe more is revealed too.

The Risk'verse Quartet is an epic, coming-of-age wartime series that follows Hermione, Draco, and the Order of the Phoenix throughout an extended war, and then onward into the aftermath. It's a realism-focused character and relationship study, with dual POV, angst and hurt/comfort, slow emotional burn w/ glacial physical burn, bickering & banter, a secret relationship, Classical Latin as a love language, violence and gore, coping with broken families, and how the brutal toll of war and trauma changes people.
But at the heart of it all, it's about a love that eclipses everything else.
