Summary
Grian had never been able to place himself very well on the old continent as a whole. His journey in this sick system had bounced him around, and it wasn’t as though he was often given much chance to get his bearings. Now that he was with Scar and Mumbo, he’d had plenty of opportunities to look at the maps or listen to them plotting their routes. That didn’t instantly give him a better grip on where he’d been previously, though. That's why he didn't realize till that roofline seared into his memory was coming into view over the treeline. Tasteful pale blues and yellows reflect the house crest that was emblazoned on the bronze inset in the front walkway. Gently sloping rooflines that arched into points with perfect symmetry between the two huge wings. It was a stunning place nestled on the crest of a grassy knoll. He knew as well as the scars he could trace along his spine, as well as the cigarette stubs snuffed against his wings with wicked intention.
Lovely place for a hellhole.

Mumbo rolled his eyes, forcing nonchalance. “Ignore him. I made the mistake of letting him have sugar with his lunch.”
“I heard you throwin’ up!” shouted Grian, clearly frustrated that Mumbo was dismissing him.
Scar picked Grian up onto his wheelchair, letting him sit on his lap. “Oh? That’s—” He looked at Mumbo.
His expression gave him away immediately. Mumbo knew it. Even Scar, famous for his obliviousness, caught on. Exactly what he was hoping wouldn’t happen.

The man hovering over him leaned back, releasing Grian completely. Cold night air rushed in to fill the void.
“I guess it’s out in the open now,” the stranger hummed. “Shame. I wanted to avoid this.”
With the additional glow occupying the space between them, Grian was finally able to catch features that were lost in the prior darkness. His curiosity outweighed all else, and he drank them in greedily. As soon as he saw who sat across from him, alarms blared in his mind.
This man wasn’t a civilian, wasn’t even a hero.
“Hello, Doctor,” the villain mused. “You were quite the help today.”

Summary
Grian does not say I love you. He does not say anything at all. Instead he guides Scar’s head down, until their lips brush, the taste of copper flooding Scar’s tongue. Then his hand drops, and his lungs stutter, one last, pained noise escaping his lips–
Scar wakes up choking on his own desperate scream.
For a moment, that’s all he can comprehend– the agonizing wail of loss that reverberates through his entire body. Scar breaks off with a harsh gasp, breath coming in short, stuttering bursts as he lifts his hands to cover his face. Grian’s lifeless eyes flutter in the dark spaces between his palms and pupils; Scar heaves, and shakes, and coughs as he forces his rabbiting heart to slow and his breaths to come even and deep.
He has to see if Grian’s okay.

"Dude, quit squirming!" Scar's laugh starts as a deep, bright rumble in the pit of his stomach, soaring from his throat to punch the air in short, ribboned strokes, each a brilliant star between them. The air here is warm, dazed, an illuminated snow globe— except the globe is his tree, and the snow drifts in downy feathers outside it, forming an intricate latticework of frostbitten fingers that crawl up the sides of his windows.
They’d retreated here an hour ago— once their impromptu snowball fight with Doc had transcended from three hermits to thirteen— all shivers and chattering teeth, drenched to the bone. Now, with the fire stoked, sweaters both discarded and exchanged, neither one of them can ignore how the bedraggled wreck of Grian’s feathers are in desperate need of preening.
"You're doing this on purpose!" Grian's retort is tart, but it lacks true bite, curling high as a silver wisp of smoke. "Sto— stop it, Scar, stop trying to tickle me—!"

The door to the rest of the shop clicked then swung open. Grian turned to it immediately, a desperate chirp bursting from his lips without any consideration to how it might harm him. He just needed someone. Anyone. It didn't have to be flock anymore. He just needed a person, someone to hold him, someone to pet his feathers and soothe his crying instincts. Please.
A masked figure approached the cage, one of the shopkeepers, and they scoffed at him for a moment, standing just far enough beyond the bars that Grian couldn't reach them. He strained, stretching through the iron. All he wanted was a touch. Just a brush of fingers or....or something. Anything. Anything to keep him from falling apart, anything to stop him from being so alone.
The shopkeeper tossed a bag through the bars of the cage, then turned around and left without saying a word. Grian ignored it, pressing himself tightly up against the bars, chirping over and over and over again, begging them to come back, to stay with him. He couldn't be alone. Scared-alone-stay-stay-stay-please. But they ignored him. They always ignored him.

Summary
Scar spotted him from the distance, his steps slowing as he approached. Grian didn’t look up, but Scar could feel the tension radiating from him like the heat of the sand.
“Hey,” Scar called softly, stopping a few feet away. “You okay over there?”
Grian didn’t answer right away. He kept his eyes on the horizon, watching the sun sink into streaks of orange and purple. His fingers gripped his elbows tighter, his knuckles white.
“‘M fine,” Grian said eventually, the word clipped.
Scar rocked back on his heels, unsure of what to say. Grian wasn’t usually like this—withdrawn, quiet, almost bristling with some invisible pressure. When he got like this, one wrong word could set him off, but leaving him alone didn’t feel right either.
