“I’m exhausted, Shane. I’m exhausted from waiting and pretending I’m okay with waiting. I am exhausted from being patient and stable and impressive in interviews and then coming home and staring at an empty room upstairs. It’s exhausting to remember that after all of this, after the interviews and the classes and telling strangers about our childhoods and our relationship and our finances and every private thing we have ever survived, that someone still has the power to decide if they think we’re good enough.”
“The crib is built,” Ilya says, voice shaking now. “There’s a tiny mobile with woodland creatures hanging above it. The car seat is in the closet. It’s been so long, the nursery doesn’t even smell like paint anymore. We’re about to go into the most intense month of the year, and I don’t know how to hold both things in my hands without dropping one and shattering the other.”
It begins with small moments like glances that linger a second too long, the quiet realization that maybe they want more. When Shane & Ilya decide to adopt, they think they’re prepared for the waiting, the interviews, the scrutiny, the careful hope. But they aren’t prepared for how much of themselves it will ask for.

Summary
It’s a series of light, measured pats, steady and absentminded, before Shane withdraws and returns both hands to the wheel.
The touch lingers anyway and Ilya can feel it through his dress pants, the warmth of Shane’s hand seeping into his skin, curling around the coil that’s twisted too tightly in Ilya’s chest, pressing in on all the right places.
He isn’t sure what Shane meant by it. Reassurance, maybe. We’re okay. You’re okay. Or maybe it’s damage control, the quiet smoothing-over Shane does so well, his press conference voice without the microphones. There’s no way Shane can’t detect the tension Ilya’s still carrying, the way he’s wound so tight he feels as if he could snap at any moment. Maybe he meant for the simple, short touch to act as an anchor to keep Ilya from unraveling in the passenger seat, a way to keep the night from getting worse.
The worst part, Ilya realizes, is that it works.

The NHL keeps a Central Registry of every team’s Emergency Backup Goaltender, or EBUG, an individual who must be prepared to play for either the home or visiting team should both goalies be taken out of commission. When the Registry was digitized in the mid 90’s a clerical error was made, and David Hollander has remained on file as Montreal’s EBUG. When Boston plays a preseason game in Montreal at the beginning of the 2017/2018 season, both of their goalies are taken out and David Hollander suddenly finds himself in the net in Boston black and yellow.
