The woman—the princess?—smiles softly and nods. She summons an arcane scroll with her free hand and writes on it with her finger as it hovers in the air. In looping, gentle cursive, Riz reads, “we’ve certainly been called that before.”

Summary
Riz perks up as he hears a key turn in the front door’s lock. It brings a soft smile to his face. As the door pushes open, Riz wipes his hands on the dish towel and folds it neatly, hanging it on the oven door. He waits for his five favorite words.
“Riz Gukgak, I am home!”
Riz’s smile grows as he steps into the small foyer and is greeted by the sight of his husband.
“Welcome home, Baron.”

With a final yank of his chest, the creature erupts from him, enormous and inky black. Riz can’t make out its shape, not with the corners of his vision starting to turn fuzzy and gray, but he’s afraid of it all the same. It speaks, though Riz can make out no obvious mouth, in a deep, gravely voice.
“You have spoken the name of the Night Yorb.” The eldritch creature spins in a circle, whipping up an intense wind and throwing dark orbs through the air that blot out the sunlight. “An age of darkness forevermore!”

Summary
When Fabian told him that he had written a letter to be read in case of his death, Riz wasn’t sure he ever wanted to read it. He had been in the process of digging Fabian out of his own grave and he hadn’t wanted to admit that Fabian was anywhere close to death. If Riz put the letter out of his mind, maybe he could pretend like he and Fabian didn’t live the kinds of lives that put their mortality to the test almost every day. He could pretend like Fabian was never going to die so he would never have a reason to read the note.
But, once Fabian was safely above ground, Riz became consumed with thoughts of what was in the letter. He needed to find it and see what Fabian wrote to him, what he deemed important enough to be in a post-mortem memorandum.
Riz carefully unfolds the parchment and reads its words twice over.

Summary
He lets his eyes close, soothed into a state of something close to relaxation by the steady breaths of his best friend, his partner, his husband. His captain. They have so many words to describe each other. Riz rarely knows which one to use. They each mean different things to him and there’s some that he feels more comfortable using than others. Calling Fabian his partner feels like spilling a secret that he wants to keep nestled inside his heart. Calling him his best friend feels like an incomplete sentence.
Calling him his husband makes his stomach do flips. Riz tries not to think about why that is.
He defaults to calling him his captain. It’s simpler.

Riz falls to his knees and shakes his head, looking down at the grass.
He had the same thought, months ago. He begged and pleaded with his dad, with gods, with anyone who would listen, to let him go back. He wasn’t done on the Material Plane. He had more life to live.
His dad said he could be made a field angel. That was the best he would get and Riz took the offer. It meant that he could observe the living, at the very least, and start to interact with the world once he got more stable.

Fabian jogs over to Riz and checks him for injuries. He’s fine, if a little bruised, so he lets Fabian pull him to his feet.
The crack sounds again and, this time, Riz can tell that it’s coming from the mountain. “Fuck,” he curses under his breath. “It’s an avalanche.” His heart stops. They’re standing at the base of a mountain that’s about to pour all of its snow down onto their heads. He sees cracks form on the snow on the side of the mountain and his heart leaps into his throat. They’re dead. They’re both dead.
