“Hey,” says the soft voice in question. When she surfaces enough to peek over the top of the cushion, there he is. He’s leaning down, hands resting on his knees so he’s closer to being on her level. Smiling at her, his eyes are twinkling behind his hair. Like the fish, she thinks to herself, and almost giggles. He has a smudge of green paint on his cheek, and across the shoulder of his white shirt. “Look who’s awake. Did you sleep well, Miss Bodyguard?”

“—No,” he says, low and solemn. “Join me, here, right now.”
“What? Oh—I—” She stammers, craning her neck to the big window in search of the right words, the right response.
It’s supposed to be around five in the morning, but yesterday’s forecast mentioned a chance of heavy rain, which explains the gradual appearance of dull blue-grey clouds.
“You’re not making fun of me, aren’t you?”
Rafayel pushes the curtain aside and she finds herself trapped under his intense, elegiac eyes. The colors of coral and deep-sea stare back at her. “Do I look like it?”

That was the worst night ever.
Until it turned into, well, not the best, but a little bit better one.
