Summary
Something is wrong. Something is really wrong. He is hurt. He has to be hurt. When? How? Mike was right there. He was right there.
“Shit,” he whispers. Then louder, “Shit—Will, hey. Stay with me.”
Lucas looks over at the sound of his voice. Dustin does too, their argument cutting off mid-sentence.
Mike barely notices.
He cups Will’s face with one shaking hand, trying to get him to focus. “Look at me. Come on, look at me.”
Will tries.
Mike can see him trying, and that somehow makes it worse.
His eyelids flutter. His gaze catches on Mike’s face for half a second, slips, catches again. There is something open in his expression, something fragile and stripped down and horribly unlike the way Will usually holds himself together.
“It’s nothing,” Will murmurs.
Mike almost laughs, except there is nothing funny in him at all.
“What?”

Summary
He took a step forward, his eyes scanning the shop for the source of the heavenly scent. His tail caught the edge of a tall wooden stand displaying dozens of small potted lavender plants.
Crash!
The stand wobbled precariously for a moment before tipping over completely. Terracotta pots shattered on the polished wooden floor, spilling dark soil and lavender sprigs everywhere. The sound was deafening in the quiet shop.
"Shit!" Mike yelped, his ears flattening against his head with pure mortification. He dropped to his knees immediately, trying to gather the broken pieces, his tail still going a mile a minute, now knocking over a nearby watering can. "I'm so sorry! I'll clean that up."
"That's... quite alright." The voice was soft, a little hesitant, but it sent a shiver down his spine.
Mike looked up.
And the world stopped.

“Just saying, if you’re taking another hit, you should share it with me,” Mike says, and Will slowly tilts his head, drinking in every word. “It just makes sense. Like, mathematically.”
Will’s reddened eyes narrow, bewildered. “Mathematically?”
“If there’s two hits left, we’d each only get one,” Mike explains. “But if we shotgunned, we’d both get two.” God, this is the best idea he’s had in ages. He should’ve stolen Will’s weed, like, months ago. “That’s like, bang for your buck. This is simple math, Will Byers. Keep up.”
In which it’s well past midnight in New York, Will can’t sleep, and Mike feels like they barely know each other anymore.
So, they get a little high. Mike is very normal about all of it.

“You… um, smoke?” Will asks before he can stop himself, swallowing as he watches a boy lean against the dusty, cracking brick wall.
Will doesn’t know much about the boy, except that his name is Mike and his father is the pastor.
“What?” He replies, pulling the cigarette from his lips and lightly blowing the smoke from his mouth. “Just because my dad is the pastor, you think I can’t enjoy a cigarette?

Will Byers is no stranger to religious guilt. He carries it everywhere he goes, and it’s starting to weigh him down.
When he meets Mike Wheeler, the pastor’s son, he realizes there is more to life than just fearing God, and it’s much scarier.

Will has felt this before. He’s felt it in basements and bike rides and hospital rooms. In late nights and shared looks and the way Mike always seemed to turn toward him, even when he didn’t mean to. He’d named it a long time ago, quietly, carefully, like you label a box you don’t plan to open. It fed everything else. The hope he’d already strangled. The recognition he’d buried. The longing. The wanting. The terrible, stupid belief that some things could be mutual without being spoken. That you could be seen without asking for it. That someone could know you and still stay. Understanding.
Maybe if he killed this one, the rest would finally starve.

“Why, Mike? Why didn’t you…” Will’s voice breaks, and his true feelings ripple through the facade of anger. Mike understands now.
“I wrote you a letter every single day!” Mike shouts, louder than the rain, the ice cold water that’s piercing their skin, louder than the thunder that crackles threateningly. The long grass whips against his shins, and the wind throws rain into his eyes. He can see even darker clouds rolling in from the distance, but he continues.
“For 6 months. 182 days, I wrote to you. 182 letters.” Will looks beautiful, all rain-washed and wind blown, he looks like a wreck, devastated, maybe shocked, but so beautiful, and Mike feels warmth in his ribcage and bloodstream despite the terribly cold rain that pelters down onto them. He looks at Will’s face, his mouth, his eyes, really takes him in, and his lips are parting and he’s not sure if he can control himself anymore.
Or, Mike Wheeler is hopelessly in love with Will Byers. And also very stupid about it, because of course he is.

Jane had looked like she wanted to laugh hard but stopped herself, and Max tried hiding her smile behind her palm. Nancy paused mid bite and Jonathan looked like he wanted to be anywhere but here.
Karen Wheeler looked back at her innocent ten year old in shock, Holly didn’t really understand such wild reactions from everyone, especially when she glanced back and forth from Mike who sat in front of Will and to Will and Chance who sat by together mortified.
“You and me both, Holly” Ted, her father had spoken. Adding fuel to the fire that had the room even more speechless.

“He went into his first heat overnight. I really should have seen the signs, it’s just so uncommon at sixteen. I wasn’t even thinking of it.”
Something's up with Will. Their friends say Mike is crazy, but if anyone knows Will, it's Mike. When Will presents as an omega two years earlier than most people should, Mike can't even gloat about being right, because he's suddenly being sent into overdrive at Will's newfound distress at the situation. But Mike will make it right, he'll keep him safe. That's his job, and he takes pride in it.
