"Put your arm in here," he snaps, and Merlin bites back a hiss at the sting from the cool water. As Arthur unrolls bandages, he says sharply, "what the hell were you thinking? Were you thinking? What on earth possessed you to put your arm in a burning fireplace?"
Merlin makes a disconcerted noise and Arthur looks at him intently, frown furrowing his brow. He looks, really looks, and Merlin wonders vaguely what he's seeing. The tiredness, the fear, the shadows. He knows he looked a mess earlier and that was before the execution.
Merlin freaks out during the execution of a sorcerer.

Gwen, though Merlin would tease him relentlessly to admit it. Gaius, who raised him as much as his father did.

His exhausting younger cousin.
But keeping his... zealous younger cousin safe, after so long sticking tight to Arthur's side as his overprotective manservant, is certainly a challenge. Especially while trying to keep pretending everything is normal, for Merlin's safety (Did Arthur think he was so indestructible at that age? He'd have to ask Leon.)first fic I'm posting! Summary
Merlin wakes up in Ismere with no memory of who he is after Morgana knocks him out. The Diomare calls him Emrys and, believing that is his name, and that he is a dragon lord, he calls. He's surprised when two show up, healing one, while giving the other a shock.
He's dropped off at an abandoned house where he precedes to make a life for himself. He ends up with more than he bargained for when a woman shows up begging him to take her magical children in. It keeps happening and before he knows it he has six children relying on him and looking up to him.
Along the way, knights pass by on patrol and quickly identify his new home as a sanctuary and take rest there on occasion while passing through.

"What's her name then?" Leon asked reasonably. Arthur stared. "My lord, is it...At all possible she might have just been in your head?" He asked, gently. Arthur felt his mouth drop.
"I am not crazy!"
"Well..." Merlin began and the prince turned to glare at him. "I've watched you try to put on a shirt, sire."
"He said crazy. Not incapable." Elyan murmured and immediately winced when Arthur gaped at him. "Sorry, I...Sorry." He offered weakly. "You're not crazy."
"Just incapable!" Merlin smiled. Arthur hated everyone and swore on his life he would find this damn lake lady even if it was the last thing he ever did.
