Summary
I watched Pavel closely today; I always do. More so than anything else I have watched, including my targets. I notice every time he rights his gold-embroidered tie. Every time he fidgets with one of his immaculate braids, the fiery red and orange extensions woven into the ends complementing the warm sepia of his skin like the gleaming glory of an August sunset. Every folding of his hands, every nervous twitch of his left eye, every sound that passes the opulent curve of his lips. He’s gorgeous like that, too — stone-faced, bossy, radiating grace and danger in equal measure without trying. But I couldn’t stop thinking about being alone with him — a gentler version of him, relaxed and attentive and all mine, just like the kills I like to savor when I’m not on duty — instead of focusing on the meeting.

Upon that, he chuckled, and Cýliane startled as something close to relief scratched at the edge of her mind. Muted, still, as all of her emotions were — merely a faint echo of a life long abandoned — but shockingly similar to what she remembered of the emotion.
“It’s refreshing to hear that question asked not out of a need to protect me or avenge my suffering. Just that typical morbid curiosity of yours.”
Cýliane shrugged, still eyeing the marks left all over him like someone had tried to torture the literal key to heaven out of him. “I simply want to know which unhinged sadist to keep on my side.”

“Can you handle some more pain?” For once, there’s no teasing cadence to his words; I know from his stern tone and scrutinizing gaze that it’s not a test, but a genuine check-in. “Nothing too heavy, and there’s a reward in it, of course. But if you’re not up for it, I understand.”
For you, always, I want to say, but I bite the flattery back. As a courtesan, it is my job to please my clients. As his submissive, it is my job to please him. But moments like this remind me that he needs honesty from me more than anything. A genuine no will always please him more than a deceitful yes that risks harm.
Luckily, my robust body and the sheer thrill of our dynamic allow me to keep on pushing through for a pretty long while. I just can’t get enough of this man — I’ve never had to tell him no before, and tonight is no different.
“Absolutely,” I confirm, nodding eagerly. “Please, go on.”

“You’re thinking too loudly,” Lynire whispered into the fragile silence (...)
Cae let out a quiet laugh. “Sorry.”
She swatted at his arm, but there was no force behind it. No real anger. “Stop that. Tell me what’s on your mind instead.”
He didn’t — not for a long time. And she didn’t pry; she just kept playing with his hair, waiting patiently.
“I think it was the counting.” When he finally complied, the words were painstakingly vomited up more than spoken. Some things — things that tapped into the scattered fragments of his past — he preferred to leave buried, too afraid of cutting himself on their razor-sharp edges all over again.
Lynire stilled and hummed a confused, “Hmm?”
“The counting.” A sigh spilled from his lips as he shifted in her arms, tipping his head back to blink up at her from beneath sleep-heavy lids. “That’s what set me off earlier.”

Perhaps Ilya, in bed with Shane at his cottage months later, finally shares this detail with him. Which perhaps encourages other unspoken details to be shared, and some fantasizing about who else they would like to tell. On purpose.
Perhaps the late night fantasizing snowballs into an actual plan. A labour day weekend party where they surprise everyone that matters to them (Marlow is also invited). For better and for worse.

Izzy does. He trusts Blackbeard, he has to trust Blackbeard, because the other option is a life where he can trust no one and there’s still a small, sickly part of him that isn’t prepared for that. Blackbeard doesn’t feel fear, but Israel Hands does. Every day of his life, he’s felt fear.
