Tim glanced at the pamphlets in question and flinched so badly that he dropped the whole stack on the floor at the sight of a towheaded teenage boy smiling up at the camera, hugging a stuffed rabbit to his fuzzy-pajama-clad chest. The top of the pamphlet read Caring for Your Little in a friendly, pastel font. You don’t want that, he scolded himself, stubbornly ignoring the mortifying wobble of his lower lip and the hollow ache in his chest as he gathered the papers off the carpet without looking at them. You’re not some pathetic baby; you’re a Drake, and Drakes aren’t Littles.

“What’s happening?” Mustang asked sharply, turning toward them with his clouded eyes still lingering a few feet over their heads. “Hawkeye? What’s Fullmetal doing? Is there something wrong with his automail?”
Ed flicked the lighter again, waited a little more patiently this time, and inhaled. Then he gave Hawkeye a nod, giving in to the inevitable. The only reason Mustang hadn’t figured it out already was probably because Ed didn’t do a lot of... this sort of thing. The comfort thing. Mustang liked people to play into his expectations.
“Edward came out to smoke opium,” Hawkeye said at last. “He says it helps with the pain from his automail.”

Roy Mustang wasn't telling him something, and it had something to do with the Elric brothers. Hughes was going to do whatever it took to drag the secret out of him, even if it involved going undercover to find some terrorists in Western and posing as a couple. There was something going on with those boys and it went beyond Al's armor and Ed's inability to admit when he was in pain and had reached his limits. Since Roy wasn't going to tell him, he was going to find out himself.

It really was true—people spent so much time and energy worrying about what others might think of them, forgetting that they, in turn, did the same. Most of the things they felt insecure about in themselves, other people never even saw—not because they were indifferent, but because they were too busy worrying about their own insecurities.
That was how they had been able to hide the truth about Al‘s body from most people for so long, after all.
Five times Edward tries to hide his issues and is surprised that it actually works. Plus one time it doesn't.

His finger pressed the button.
Silence. Completely uninterrupted except for the high, drawn out chime that hung in the air. Had he known what was coming and been a man who believed in God, he might've considered it a message from the deity to run while he still could. Ask him later and he might tell you that standing there on the porch, his brother by his side, his anxiety fluttering in his chest, was the start to another period of his life where things went wrong.

Get ambushed, either wake up in a new location or be dragged somewhere close to where he was jumped, antagonize his kidnappers until they did something stupid and he would kick their asses, and maybe even be rescued, if plan A failed, by stupid Mustang and his team. Either way, he got out, and would then get a lecture on “how to do his job better” and “how could this always happen to him” and “stop being so easy to kidnap.”

Sometimes, Dick is scared that he doesn’t know how to love anyone in the right way. He knows love is messy, that it’s like Gotham, breathing with death yet so alive at the same time. Love is something cruel and terrifying but even more beautiful because of it. He loves without thought, but with action. Always too much, too little, and never enough. So maybe the issue isn’t love, maybe it’s just him. The issue is the way all the blood between his family never stopped spilling, how his guilt and martyr complex pushed everyone away, how he hasn’t heard from his family in months. He doesn’t know how to love his family properly anymore. (To be fair, they don’t know how to love him either.)
