My gift to you is a mini Yeager-centered Halloween fic about our two favorite brothers going trick or treating! Not crazy long and not much happens but I still enjoyed writing it a lot and I had fun writing the banter between the Yeager fam.
(BTW I was gonna put this in the Yeager Family Blurbs but ended up deciding that it deserves its own thing because of the length plus it'll be easier for people to find :>)

[Time passes oddly. Between one second and the next, Sokka has the Fire Lord pinned to the wall with his hands around the bastard’s throat. Golden eyes (one gold eye, his mind whispers) widen in shock.
“Sokka?” he chokes out. And then he smiles.
What the fuck?
“Sokka, I—”
Sokka slams his head against the wall, once, twice, and the smile wipes off his face. Good.
“What,” Sokka bites out, “have you done to my sister?”]

An injury leaves Sokka with amnesia. His last memory is of the failed invasion, of leaving his father behind in enemy territory on the Day of Black Sun. Of hopelessness. Rage.
But then he wakes up, and the war is over. Suddenly, he must come to terms with the fact that years have passed, and that he's somehow the Southern Water Tribe Ambassador to the Fire Nation. He is also supposedly friends with banished-Prince-turned-Fire-Lord Zuko, of all people. Close friends.

Zuko wakes up the first time it happens to the smell of burning flesh. He at first thinks it’s just a lingering memory, the vestiges of a nightmare he’s had many times, but then he hears the shouts and clanging of metal that accompanies it.
The telltale signs of a fight, right outside his door.
So of course he does the sensible thing and rushes toward the commotion without a second thought, still in his loose bedclothes and bleary-eyed from sleep. He practically falls out of the door, stumbling right into the middle of both the hall and the battle waging within it.
At this point, Zuko's no stranger to attempts on his life. He can handle it.
Or five times Zuko's friends save him from an assassination attempt, and one time they're almost too late.

Summary
Zuko realizes his destiny much earlier. As in, as soon as he wakes up in the palace after his Agni Kai and is told he is banished. Unfortunately, he's never been a patient one. So he storms right up to Ozai and tells him what he's going to do. And gets locked up for over three years. Then, one day, he's being pulled out and told he's the new Fire Lord.
A "Zuko never meets the Gaang and suddenly becomes Fire Lord after three years of literal torture" AU. In which the Gaang doesn't know what to think of the new Fire Lord who happens to be the missing nephew of Aang's firebending teacher, Iroh constantly has a headache, and, sure, maybe the world hates the Fire Nation, but the Fire Nation LOVES Zuko, and he can work with that.

Sokka doesn’t even see Zuko move. One moment, he’s several feet away, twin dao raised in a ready stance, and the next, something is sweeping Sokka's legs from under him, and he’s hitting the dirt hard, a blade against his throat.
Zuko looks down at him from above, crowned in bright sunlight. His eyes are very gold.
Sokka can feel all his thoughts go bye-bye.
“I win,” says Zuko.
“Hng,” says Sokka.Distantly, he’s kind of proud of himself for getting out at least that much.

This is more of a "zuko botches his escape attempt and spends the rest of the war in prison, and then when he becomes Fire Lord they leave him in prison" kind of thing.
After committing treason, Zuko spends months in prison, and even after both his father and Azula go missing, the guards can't coax him out of his cell. And then the Avatar shows up. How's the Gaang supposed to talk to a Fire Lord who doesn't even believe he's the Fire Lord?
