Kyoujurou’s eyes well up and flow at last. All the tears he’s been keeping at bay have broken through the dam, with the cracks that Tengen and his feelings have masterfully carved out.
Having time implies having a future. And knowing about Tengen’s retirement plans, he speaks of his whole life. They differ in that regard. Kyoujurou doesn’t think that far ahead except when it comes to his little brother. Not when it comes to his own life. He’s always thought he’ll die on duty someday. Protecting the people, the humanity as his family has done for generations.
Nothing less; his promise to Mother is close to his heart and he always hopes he makes her proud.
But nothing more; committed in the life of a demon slayer and a Hashira, never bothered with the life outside of that.
Tengen wants to have a future. A future with his wives and now, a future with him. He makes promises that Kyoujurou doesn’t know if he can keep. He doesn’t know how to answer him.
He has started being greedy again. Wanting more than he must.
It must show on his face, this conflict in him as pink eyes soften and his laces their fingers together. His kiss is soft, plaint and Kyoujurou’s shoulders drop. Reassuring, his mind drifts again.
“Kyoujurou, come back.” he pleads with him, hands around his waist as if steading him, “It’s fine to hope about your tomorrow.”
A sob escapes him and, finally he gives him a meek nod. A compromise, the similarities and differences between them make them understand each other. Out of all the Pillars, Tengen is the one that understands him the most; even when they minutely diverge, he accepts him, quirks and all.
