“The late shift guys like to take their time,” Vash said, staring at Knives’ chest with hooded eyes. Stroking his back, again. It really wasn’t as soothing as Vash likely meant it to be. But it seemed to soothe Vash. Through that, it calmed Knives secondhand.
“I still have work to do,” Knives said, gripping the headrest. He had long figured out how to disable the inner cameras of the cockpit for times like this. Vash took it as far more leeway than it really was.

Here’s the thing: Vash Saverem is broke. Not just poor — oh, no. He’s out-on-the-street broke. He’s three eviction notices down and the last one was printed on pink paper. Fired from two jobs within a week flavor of broke. He hasn’t eaten since yesterday morning when he inhaled a granola bar and had to drink directly from the tap to keep from choking.
So, when he got said pink-papered eviction notice, Vash knew he couldn’t be picky about his employment anymore. When he initially went job searching, all his hope had spiraled down the drain with every page he sifted through. References, high school diploma, good standing, experience… Every single one listed something that Vash simply didn’t have. By the time he got to the fifteenth page, all the listings had been for such specific types of people that it was no wonder they weren’t getting snapped up immediately. Contractors and freelancers and people with connections that Vash could never even hope to have. All except for one:

Fusion of triguns. After the big confrontation with vash where knives presumably merged with dependents, he presumes he killed his brother and disappears. Found by a plant engineer who figures him a dependent and restarts the moody plant, after ~2 years of knives trying to initiate last runs and make a town, realizes knives is an independent. Knives very upset he killed his brother, surprised that grandpa rigged the town to not use hos energy and in fact to funnel some of the ambient human lifeforce back to him to help heal. He gets adopted and finally learns acceptance. Vash is actually alive, shows up to kill and reat maims knives but they reconcile, still tense and knives is still a violent daggerboi. Knives captured by human federation, kills dominion and the independent chronica working for them rageful, threatened to explode vash bc collateral nothing to harvesting and killing knives. Summary
A bottle was swung, and the broken glass sprinkled over the slave and through his hair. He caught a piece underneath his palm and pressed down to grind the shard deep. Lifting his eyes, he looked toward the men who were now in the middle of a brawl. Blood was running from a slit in a temple, from a nose cracked to one side, from a gouge in a cheek. It blurred together as they knocked the table over completely. In the shouting, none of them noticed the radio blare back to life. It was right next to the slave, so his ears picked up the vexatious static burn.
It spoke to him like a secret. “Those solar flares from the North Star have been huge recently. Even our weak telescopes are picking them up.”
He’d heard about them before, but the slave didn’t really understand what solar phenomena were. All he could picture was blasts of hot light leaving from the center of the star. He thought all stars had hearts. The beat of their hearts kept them shining. Kept them warm.
Space was cold, right? They had to stay warm.

Vash’s heart skips a beat, or two, or three. Perhaps it stopped altogether. It might as well, and pull him straight from the living world into Hell or Heaven or whatever afterlife there is for a man like him, because he’s looking at the face of a dead man.
The sunlight from the broken windows shines across the priest’s face, highlighting the arch of his nose, the sharp angle of his cheekbones, the stubble on his jaw, the warm dark skin under jet black hair. He wears a smile, that damned smile, the one that was shared with Vash so rarely yet burned itself into his retinas regardless, where it quirks up at one side and crinkles at the edges of his eyes. His robe is undone, revealing a simple grey button up shirt beneath, done up to only halfway up his chest. A rosary hangs below his collarbones.
The priest steps down from the altar, hesitant. "Hey, are you good? You look like you're gonna hurl."

Vash ends up in New July City to visit some Independent PLANTs. His past, unfortunately, shows up in the form of a priest with warm skin and a bright smile, and he doesn't think he can outrun it this time.
