Bernadette "Birdie" Scrivener didn't return to Hawkins by choice. After receiving a semester of probation from her dream college, though, she has no choice but to come back in March of 1986.
Rumors regarding the mysterious deaths of multiple high school students have flooded Hawkins, putting everyone on edge. Her fellow Family Video employees, however, seem particularly concerned.

Mrs Harrington loved her son and he loved her right back. She was the isolated wife to a distant man and Steve was her entire world. He followed her around the house like a little duckling, preferred sitting with her as she got ready instead of playing with his toys. There was something so magical about her careful ritual to him.
She’d always turn to him, hair done and make-up beautiful and do a little “Tadah!” Steve would smile at her and tell her she looked like a princess. She’d smile back at him and scoop him up in her arms to twirl him around the room. “If I’m a princess, you’re my little prince.”
His father told her she shouldn’t encourage him to sit with her. He thought it would make him soft. He was a boy, after all. He told Steve his mother had always wanted a daughter, but he was glad he’d gotten a son. “Plenty of time to turn you into a proper man, son.”

No one knew Vecna’s next move now that he’d succeeded in opening the gates. No one cared about cleaning up the cabin any longer; now their main concern was to build a fortress. But now the house was quiet, the only sound was the wind coming through the gap in the ceiling. Will and Mike were alone.

He could see his house, but it wasn't his house. "Mommy!" Will shrieked again, holding the rifle to his chest as he looked around, tears running down his face.
Only one thought floated around in Will's head, he had to be dead.

The Upside Down is the prison of the Mind Flayer, the collective consciousness of all evil in the world, imprisoned for its crimes against the once lavish and beautiful land that was once called the Hellscape. When Vecna wanted Will to be the vessel, someone on the other side hid him from the prying eyes of Vecna and the Mind Flayer. Teaching him the ways of the Hellscape, always watching from the shadows, yet never intervening. It is like nothing can get out of the Upside Down ... or in.
