Summary
Ninety-one years after the Fall of Erebor, and sixty-two since the loss of his father and brother at the Battle of Azanulbizar, Mahal grants Thorin II Oakenshield a boon in the form of a child, the first of the like since the Second Age. After dealing with the misfortune and poverty that has characterized his entire adult life thus far, Thorin feels a burgeoning hope of a better future for himself, his family, and his people. This hope turns into hardened determination when Tharkûn presents him with an opportunity to reclaim his homeland and return Durin’s Folk to their former glory.
If only Thorin could overcome the sickening terror that grips him at the thought of his child and sister-sons being lost as casualties to his ambition.
If only he could stop staring at the damned Melekûn.

In fact, when Bilbo thinks about it he may not even be thinking about politics anymore. It's time to gather up his strength and to gather up his dwarves. Not just for himself, but the little surprise he picked up along the way.

“Dulin stayed at his father’s right hand until he grew tired of the monotony and left to make a name for himself apart from Durin the Deathless,” Mhete says, confident and matter-of-fact as she tends to be. “He died on the road before he could.”
Scholar Nerar frowns. “Mhorbokul,” she says, “where did you get this idea?”
“The library, Scholar,” Mhete says after a moment of pause. “You told us to read anything we wanted pertaining to Durin I.”
“Please give me the names of the librarian and the book they gave you when you finish for today, then. Dulin died at his father’s side.”
Mhete nods, pressing her lips together like a vice to prevent herself from saying something more, and settles back into her seat to listen. Scholar Nerar turns back to the board, beginning to explain the beginning of Queen Dis’ reign as the second leader of Durin’s Folk, and Mhete’s charcoal continues its even rhythm against her slate.
There was no book, in truth, nor a librarian that led her to this knowledge. There was no place she found the knowledge, for she simply knew.
Mhete would rather not consider the ramifications of it too hard.

Kelben sits up, crossing their legs beneath them and shivering at the cool stone below their buttocks and against their ankles. The air around them is warm but the floor is not, and the difference feels strange. They are used to warm air and warm stone, or cold air and cold stone, and the difference between air and ground suggests a recent fire.
“Are you making something?” Kelben asks the shapeless voice, and the deep voice they cannot see chuckles as if it holds an avalanche within.
“I just did,” their Maker says, vast and amused. “I made you.”

Mahal may breathe life into their children, but they choose their own songs as they walk Arda. By the time they die, they may not wish for the body he gave them, wrought with care on his great anvil.
Mahal very quickly grows used to reforging their children's bodies twice when they enter his Halls.
