Ash from the shrine lingers on her wedding kimono, the scent overpowering even now as they kneel for the banquet for their honour. Something shy of conflict had flickered across her betrothed face as they had recited the marriage rites. A haunted fear to his eye when he’d locked eyes with her briefly, those amber glasses on his face even now. For a man who had no doubt slaughtered many men, Akemi can’t help but ponder why a marriage ceremony would be the thing that weakened him.

He finally closes the distance, kneeling down to Pax’s level. He presses his servos against the rock wall behind Orion against either side of his helm. Retracting his battle mask, Orion can see D-16’s expression clearly. It is pained, twisted with sadness and regret. There is anger within the tension of his faceplate, but it is laced with fear. With vulnerability, no matter how hard D-16’s crimson optics glow in harsh repression. “Then why do you keep—leaving me?” D-16 pleads. His voice is hoarse, and his servos tremble under the weight of a thousand centuries.
“You are the one who stopped looking back.”
“How can I look back,” he rasps, “when all my life you have been in front of me?” He leans closer to Orion, and the tip of his helm touches his. His voice softens, almost reverent. Almost… worshipping. “You were always chasing something greater. And I—” He choked on his words, the confession nearly splitting him in half. It hurt to admit to something as stupid as that. “I was always chasing you.”
