God. He wanted to crawl inside a wall and die. He wanted her to call him pathetic and broken and a little boy with a freudian issue. He wanted her to tell him he was useless. Instead, she turned toward him, a half-step. Just close enough to say, calmly:
“You can hire all the women in the world to say those things, Roman. They won’t sound like me.”
It knocked the wind out of him. Not because it was cruel, but because it wasn’t.
She walked away before he could respond.
Later that night, he jerked off to the memory of her not speaking to him.

The thing about Gerri was she never flinched.
People thought it was strength, the way she held her spine like a ruler and blinked slowly through the most chaotic storms of Roy family meltdown. But it wasn’t strength. It was a rehearsal. It was a pattern. It was muscle memory, built from decades of watching men like Logan gnaw at the bones of empires, built from knowing exactly when to stay silent and when to speak just loud enough to be heard.
She had survived men like Roman before. She had outlasted them.
But Roman was different in the way a matchbook is different from a house fire. It wasn’t that he scared her. It was that he didn’t know what he wanted. And Gerri had no patience for boys who didn’t know what they wanted.
She heard about the dominatrix before Roman said anything. Of course she did. Manhattan was small when your net worth looked a certain way. Some whisper from a lawyer she used to sit next to on boards, something vulgar and amused: “Apparently he brought a lookalike to the Mercer, tried to have her bark legalese at him while he came.”
Gerri smiled politely, then scheduled a performance review with HR the next day.
But she didn’t bring it up. That would be too easy.
Instead, she watched him sweat. Watched him show up to meetings late, watched his eyes flick to her like she might lash him for forgetting to send an email. She said nothing. The silence itself was the punishment. It always had been.
Gerri wasn’t cold. That was another thing people got wrong. She just knew the value of withholding. Love, attention, power- they all meant more when rationed. You couldn’t survive in corporate law for three decades without becoming fluent in that currency.

She let him beg, indirectly, in those pathetic boardroom moments where he said things that were so clearly about her but filtered through the language of business. “Control the narrative,” he’d said last week. “Tighten the messaging.” As if he wasn’t talking about how she’d stopped answering his texts.
Gerri crossed her legs in the exact way he used to stare at. She made sure he noticed.

And now he’s got a bank account full of blood money and a head full of static. He can’t sleep unless the TV’s on. He can’t cum unless someone’s yelling. He can’t tell the difference between affection and humiliation anymore. Maybe there’s no difference. Maybe he just doesn’t deserve the kind that doesn’t make him squirm.
Because Gerri never gave him what he wanted. She gave him something worse. She made him want to be better. And then walked away. -

Bucky does not act on ruining that 84-year streak right then and there because Sam’s eyes are enormous, practically sparkling with unhinged curiosity that he looks scary similar to the kid whenever something flags down his hyperactive brain.
“Yup,” he says, totally level-headed. The most level-headed he’s ever been.
“Think you’re outta practice?”
“Nope.” Bucky’s a natural at this. Level-headed is his middle name. "It's just like riding a bike, Sammy. Once you remember, it's pretty hard to forget."
Then suddenly it's, “Do you want to?” and Bucky feels like all his level-headedness was grabbed by the balls and ripped right out of him.
Or: Bucky wants and craves and loves Sam so much that it makes him a little dumb. And a whole lot more eager to kiss him.
