“She’s a little scared from the shouting,” I told him, “but she’s not going to hurt you or anything like that. Especially not when I’m around.”
“She’s so pretty,” he said. “Is it okay if I…?” He raised a hand as if to pet her. When I nodded, he smiled, reaching out and gently petting her back with one finger. “She’s really sweet. Can you tell her that?”
“Can we get it away?” Riley asked, still not opening his eyes. “Please?”
“Probably best,” I agreed. “She’s got places to be.” Walking over to the grass, I gently placed her at the roots of one of the bushes. It was only then that Riley cautiously opened one eye, finally stepping onto the ground.
“Thank you,” he said awkwardly, clearing his throat. “Weird, though, because I always assumed that the fear of snakes thing came from you.”
“Ophidiophobia,” I offered. “And no. They’re one of my sacred animals.”
“But Python--”
“Riley, do you have some gum?” Fen interrupted.

“Guess we’re getting her a gift,” he said as he followed Fen off.They were talking now, at least. That had to be a good sign. It was better than when we had started, at the least. Surely things could only get better from here.
Oh, past Apollo, how I wish you had never thought that.
