I wasn’t always blind.
It happened so fast, so unexpectedly that the last colour I remember seeing was the sight of my own blood on my hands as I lifted them to my face. The startling, fresh, cherry red blood which coated my fingers and dripped down my palms, circling my wrists.
I remember that I screamed for my mother before the world went dark.
A small hand is tugging on my hair, a gurgle of baby noises I can’t decipher and my one good eye snaps open. I tap my foot on the ground and I am shocked to discover that at the foot of the bed sat the man I had rescued only hours ago, fully dressed, helmet in place, his hands clasped beneath his chin as he no doubt stares at me questioningly.
