Summary
Twenty-six hours.
It’s been twenty-six hours since Hank’s spoken to Connor, but it’s not like he’s counting. Not like the number or the ticking of the fucking clock is carved into his skull.
Twenty-six hours since he blew his career up for an android. An android. Christ.
He’s been drowning in this hollow, unrelenting suffocation for twenty-six fucking hours. And now here Connor is, standing on his doorstep like nothing happened, like he didn’t just fucking disappear, like Hank hasn’t been absolutely tearing himself apart wondering if he’s dead, destroyed or just some soulless fucking husk, rebooted for the next mission, for the next bastard who has to deal with him.
And he has the fucking audacity to joke.

Summary
Connor is looking at him, staring at him, with that fucking look, the one Hank’s been trying to ignore for too long. The raw, searching, desperately hungry look, the one thing Hank has always been certain wasn’t programmed into him, because how could something entirely synthetic set his entire being on fire? He’s burning alive, incandescent with the desire to understand it.

Summary
He winked at him.
The fucker winked at him.
Hank considers himself an overall level-headed individual - well, okay, less so these days, but still, he didn't get to Lieutenant by not having some level of logic and reason overriding his temper. Sure, certain things still get to him - that jumped-up little pissant, Reed, comes to mind instantly - but androids? He thought he was above all that. Thought the haze of alcohol and grief rendered him impervious to those fuckers, to the way they acted so god-damn human, like they had any fucking idea...
And then that smug little shit, currently sat in his passenger seat - back ramrod straight, eyes shut - waltzed into Jimmy's and thoroughly fucked his day up.
And so what if his face looked like someone dragged it out of Hank's most embarrassing wet dreams, all rain-streaked and freckled and chiseled like a fucking Renaissance statue? So what if his voice sent a bolt of arousal straight down his spine when it told him about a god-damn murder, of all things?

Summary
It's funny, Connor thinks, how one thing can unravel when another is stitched.
It's less funny that he's the one unravelling, one line of code at a time.

Summary
Valery has fallen in love quickly and foolishly with men like Boris before, so the act hardly registers. He is already there, drowning his folly in liquor, and he has no expectations or even shame. Shame at something so small seems meaningless in the face of Chernobyl. What is idle, fruitless desire for an untouchable man when plumes of ionized smoke still pour from gutted rubble to blacken the sky?

Summary
A siren sounds in his chest, warns him, look away, before you fall in too deeply. Before you cannot stop yourself any longer.
Fuck off, he tells the siren. I am a dying man.

Summary
The winter before his suicide.
-
They didn't need to touch or speak to feel each other's closeness and love. Perhaps they were not particles, but waves that could oscillate together even in death.
Where the snow had previously swallowed up the sounds and fleeting thoughts of everyday life and longing had filled the void, a familiar warmth spread out that he had not felt for so long and that was entirely Valery Legasov. If they had met under different circumstances, if it had not been necessary to love in secret, if death and their love had not been so inextricably linked, would he have been able to feel the same then? The unstoppable effects of Chernobyl had also dissolved their boundaries, they blurred into one another and yet the politician was not afraid of losing himself. Their waves did not overlap to extinguish each other, they amplified each other.
