Techno just sits on the other end of the couch and bounces his leg, mostly just looking at the fire, but occasionally glancing at Tommy.
“So, uh, you do anything interesting in school today?” he asks, Tommy would laugh at his awkwardness if he wasn’t so confused.
“I failed a math test,” he says. God he wishes he could go back to that being his biggest problem.

Rick and Carl didn't escape the destroyed prison together, they got separated. Eventually, they reunite when Carl reaches Alexandria on his own. But he's... different.
Not only worn down and gaunt, but quieter, more jumpy. Carl never had room to be carefree or completely happy, growing up surrounded by death and fighting to survive, but this was a noticeable shift. Rick could swear his eyes were permanently teary; not enough to ask why he was crying but enough to catch the silent distress. It physically pained him not to know what his kid had gone through alone. Carl wasn't sharing.

The prince shakily sits next to him. He smiles brightly, charming despite the blood that stains the front of his shirt. Red and gold mixed together. Tommy tries growling, but he hiccups instead. It’s- it’s so unfair. Things shouldn’t have ended up like this.
The human raises his hand and Tommy slams his eyes shut, awaiting pain, but his hand just rests gently on top of Tommy’s head.
“Hello, I am Prince Wilbur of the Antarctic Empire,” The human runs his hand through Tommy’s hair, “and you are now tied to me.”

Or, dragon hearts are known to give humans the closest thing to immortality by binding two lives together, and King Dream had taken Tommy's heart to evade his death for hundreds of years. The boy's life is flipped when the Antarctic Emperor kills Dream and Tommy's life is bound to Prince Wilbur's.
He may not be free, but Wilbur is much nicer than Dream ever was.

“Be my apprentice,” Icarus blurted.
Tommy blinked. Gradually, the corners of his mouth dropped into the deepest frown he’d ever made. “What the fuck? Why?”
“Why?” Icarus froze and Tommy raised a judgemental eyebrow. “It’s because of your powers.”
“My powers,” he echoed. “I never told you whether or not I had powers.”
“I can… sense them,” Icarus bullshitted. Tommy pinched the bridge of his nose.
“Right. What are they, then,” he retorted.
“Uh… super… powers,” the villain answered, sounding more unsure of himself by the second.
Tommy wanted to bash his head against a wall. “Really? That’s the best you could do?”

And then, Negan says, mockingly with a touch of awe, “shit, kid. Lighten up. At least cry a little.”
Rick doesn’t know what it is, can’t parse out why it feels like something’s tugging at him, some primordial scattershot instinct gripping him roughly by the collar. Because kid? There’s a kid in this group? Rick hasn’t come across anyone younger than twenty, most of whom toughened and hewn into gritty blood-stained sharp objects.
The kid—a boy—is a sweet lily of a boy, reedy and lithe even as he kneels, pale-skinned, his hair’s long, flowy, reaches just above his collarbones.

Rick loses his way and doesn't manage to reunite with Carl and Lori. Instead, he falls in with the Saviors (and Negan), but he's never given up on finding his baby.

“Thank y’all for your help. You saved my family and a lot of people here,” said the man as he took another step forward and held out his free hand, “I’m Rick Grimes.”
Every muscle in Rick’s body was coiled and ready to move. Rick couldn’t help but stare at the man who had introduced himself as ‘Rick Grimes’. The man was clean shaven and wearing his deputy sheriff’s uniform. On his hip was Carl, a young Carl who couldn’t have been more than twelve.

Once he wakes up, gunshot wound, one less eye, and the fact that he’s all alone in a burning wreck flooded with walkers now added to the equation, he realises his situation. Full of rage and fuelled by his untreated trauma, physical and mental, he manages to survive for a while on his own. Until he stumbles across a group calling themselves the Saviours.
Carl’s lucky their leader takes a liking to him, or else life would’ve become a whole lot shittier.

Technoblade picked up the phone without pause, a motion he repeated more than eight or nine times an hour. He wouldn't say he disliked getting calls, it was a break from his grading, but he wasn't the fondest of talking to confused students.
Techno recited his little speech into the receiver, telling the caller that they'd reached his professor's office and that they were speaking to a TA.
Through the phone, where Techno normally expected to be told of an issue, there was shuffling. A curt clack and the ring of a bell in the distance.
After a few moments of silence, Techno went to speak, but closed his mouth as music started to play through the phone. It was strange and uneven, shaky piano notes that sounded live, and it was no melody he had ever heard before. It was nothing more than six notes and a panicked breath before the phone began to hum as the line was cut off.
Techno pulled the phone away from his ear.
"What the hell?"Or
Technoblade was found four years after going missing at age eight. His younger brother never was. Ten years later, Techno started getting phone calls.
