    Bookmarker's Notes

I have a policy of not reviewing in-progress series. The author has explicitly abandoned the story, and the amount that has been written is worth the read, and... This is simply the best Steven Universe fanfiction on this site.

Aenor_llelo is an author that knows how to write. How to world-build. How to make engaging stories and weave headcanon that might as well be canon. They are excellent at their work, and if you like Orphan's Path, or the Battle Subway from Pokémon, or the Legend of Zelda, their other series are well worth the read.

But I digress from the main point. Ever since I discovered this series, it has been on the top spot of my recommandations. And it is a flying shame it has not featured in my Quality Star bookmarks. The story expands the Steven Universe world in every direction, but especially post-Steven Universe Future. Being written post-CYM, it does not suffer from many shortcomings of other stories. The author took a look at "what happens with the Earth's government? How does the Era 3 Gem Government coexist with Earth? Why are Gems like that?". They provided detailed and satisfying answers to each of these questions, and more. This is Steven Universe: the DLC. And it's well worth your investment of a month+ time. If you're anything like me, you will enjoy the eventual crossovers with the other series. But both in standalone and crossover works, the series maintains a high level of quality and is gentle in onboarding.

    Required knowledge:
    * Some knowledge of Gravity Falls required to read past Part 8
    * No prior knowledge of the MCU required beyond basic Western cultural diffusion (like, I knew almost nothing about the MCU and I could read the series completely fine)

I am bookmarking this one ages after I read it. I remember really enjoying the work. Of course, this work is pre-ASPR, but it holds up surprisingly well. This is in my top 2 alongside aenor_llelo's For A Diamond Is A Marveled Thing.

The story centers around Pearls. It tells each one's story of oppression under Homeworld's regime. Of course, the Homeworld representation is necessarily closer to human than canon, but it surprisingly doesn't matter. The story is about the forgotten secretaries rising up in unison against their masters. It's honestly truly inspiring.

Unfortunately, I cannot recall specifics right now, and I'm avoiding spending my next several days in this rabbit hole, but trust me: the story is well worth your hyperfixation!

    Summary

She hates Mondays. And Wednesdays. And even Friday, for that matter. They run together; they’re boring, stupid, inconvenient.

She especially hates the days which the alarm blares for the fifth consecutive time in an imitation of a rooster’s crow, disrupting the previously serene morning silence. As she glares maliciously at the red numbers, it takes her several of the following moments to realize that her technician roommate is nowhere nearby to turn off the contraption stationed across the room.

The alarm’s imitation crows aggressively. She isn’t quite sure if she’s going to murder her roommate today or not, but she is leaning towards a hard yes.

They weren't alive, were they? Tethered to Rose in an inescapable pull, they couldn't leave even if they wanted to. But a variable inserted itself out of nowhere, and Future resigned to its inevitability...

A giant ball of angst in this Ghost AU. The Gems are dead, and Rose can't move on, at least without any external force...

Yet, it ends well. At least as well as a Ghost AU can.

Get your feelings destroyed here. This is your last angst warning. You will cry. You have no choice. But you will see the fluff.

    Quality Star Angst.

    Summary

When Steven was a baby, Pearl removed the gem on his belly and changed everything. Raised with the knowledge that he's a Diamond with the fate of the world on his shoulders, Steven struggles to keep himself apart from humanity and be the empire-ending leader everyone tells him to be.

But all that changes when he meets Connie Maheswaran, a lonely local high-schooler who craves magic and adventure, who sees through his overconfident facade to the gentle boy buried beneath. As their lives wind tighter together, she gives him hope that he can be the person he longs to be, and that an alien empire can be toppled without a war.

oh my god they were fake dating and they actually fell in love

Pearl did get his gem out at age 2, in the van. They raised him as the new Pink Diamond, but will a little Connie crumble his facade and show the world his kindness again?
A story by the wonderful EchoFour and Hadithi that tugged at my heartstrings harder than Rebecca. IMMEDIATE Quality Star, despite my usual rule of only awarding that to finished stories.

    SUMMARY (SPOILERS):

The story starts much later in Steven's and Connie's lives. As such, they are much more mature. Most events happen similarly to the show, except that Pryanka is more willing to let Connie go as she's older now. Also we're at "You're my dad" continuity wise, with Connie instead of Lars.
