“It’s funny. Like, the whole, when you get to rock bottom and you don’t think there’s any more, any further to fall, right? But then it turns out you were wrong. Rock bottom wasn’t actually rock bottom. It was the overhang.”
“Overhang for what?” Hen asked worriedly.
OR
A small thing can topple the strongest of resolves. For Buck, it's been one thing after another after another. But he doesn't snap, he doesn't get loud, he doesn't want to be more of a burden.

He can't hear the beeping of the machines or the raised voices of the nurses and doctors. He can't hear Eddie or Maddie or anyone he knows trying to find out what's happening over the chaos. He can't hear anything at all except the ringing, the ringing, the ringing.
...
After an incident at work leaves Buck near-completely deaf, Buck and Eddie have to navigate a new version of life while also ignoring the giant elephant in the room.

Summary
After surviving a traumatic kidnapping by Bonnie and Earl, who tried to force him into the role of their brain-dead son Derek, Evan "Buck" Buckley convinces himself the ordeal is behind him and skips therapy. On his way home from the station late at night, he is violently ambushed and abducted again—this time by an unseen captor wearing a grotesque Halloween mask.
He awakens with a splitting headache inside an enormous, twisted adult-sized "nursery" painted in pastel blue, with giant block letters on the wall reading **DEREK’S NURSERY**. The room is a nightmarish blend of infantilizing comfort and dungeon-like control: oversized crib with steel bars, massive changing table with restraints, shelves of thick printed diapers, a playpen, and a huge rocking chair.
Buck realizes his ordeal isn't over and that someone else wants him to be Derek. Question now is who and why?

Buck had lost-- he was sure of this now. His resolve only lasted a few weeks before his exterior began to crack; he was never a very good actor. He couldn’t keep up the greetings and the asking questions and the easy stroll. He let his shoulders creep up to his ears, let his foot tap incessantly. He did what his Captain told him, but stopped asking for anything more. Stopped following the conversation in the back of the engine on the way to the call; he just stared out the window, thinking about the case to come, preparing for it. When he woke every morning, there was no big recovery milestone to strive for, no big fight for the soul of his career to win. Not even the happy swell of being back on shift -- something so easy to dismiss, that had dominated so much of his life, that he had taken for granted-- that had catalyzed him each morning of his first week back.
An old habit of his had returned. A bad habit.~~
or: after the lawsuit, buck confronts what it was he wanted all along. he looks and looks and longs for it; the team looks right through him. buck breaks-- right down the middle.

Buck cried out, his knees collapsing onto the dirty concrete floor beneath him as a numb sensation took over his now limp body.
"Shh.." A familiar voice whispered from behind him, pressing a cloth over Buck's mouth to muffle the distressed male's screams as he pricked a needle into his neck, watching the man lose consciousness as he shoved him into his vehicle and sped off. Payback.
What if Jeffery's eyes were set on Buck instead of Harry after seeing the deep connection between Athena and him?
