At the time he'd just chalked it up to her trying to make him less trusting, less friendly, less naturally curious. Even as an adult, the woman continued her warnings, but he hadn't listened. Never listened. Even when he imagined her voice warning him over and over as he lay sprawled out on Herbert West's secondhand sofa listening to him rant and muse about Death into the small hours of the morning.
But, oh, how right had she been.
