As evening slowly fell over Los Angeles, a heavy silence pervaded the loft. The light from the city's street lamps cast pale shadows on the ceiling. Buck was curled up on his uncomfortable sofa, staring into space. The TV projected colours onto him, laughter occasionally erupted from it, yet he couldn't see or hear it. The cold of the room, which had never seemed so biting, infiltrated his soul like the distance that had grown between him and those he loved.
