Jon was quiet. “...are you going to kill me?”
The thing looked shocked. “Oh, darling, no! And before you get any more awful ideas in your head, I didn’t do anything to your friend. He simply had to go home and change out of wet clothes.” The thing rolled it’s eyes, slouching grumpily in it’s seat. “Goodness, where would you get that idea?”
“What…” Jon paused. “What are you?”
The thing smiled, and the black aura appeared again. When it lifted, Jon couldn’t keep in a yell, stumbling backwards and knocking over a pile of papers.
Something green and reptilian grinned at him, mouth filled with rows of sharp teeth. It’s eyes blinked sideways, like a lizard, and it tossed it’s long blonde hair like a strange supermodel. It laughed, seeming to find Jon’s reaction amusing.
“Really, darling, that’s quite rude.” It shook a finger at Jon, as if scolding a child. A thick, green tail flicked, as if to accentuate the strangeness of this new guest. “Name’s Double Trouble. Actor, espionage, pianist extraordinaire.”

Summary
Melanie is grateful to Jon three times.
The first, for coming back at all. Not that she missed him, not that she’s glad he’s not dead. But the last few months in the Institute have felt hollow and it’s a sickening relief to have a target for her anger again.
The second, for asking to remove the bullet, and allowing her to refuse. This is a more complicated gratitude, because she doesn’t want it. But she can’t bring herself to wish he’d kept this meagre measure of control, of choice, from her. So she is grateful, and she hates it.
The third, for being the obvious monster everyone has their eye on, so they never think to ask about the blood under her nail, don’t wonder when she slips out the door of the archives with a knife in hand. Maybe she should feel guiltier for letting Jon take the fall, knowing full well that everyone involved in their little intervention has at least as much blood on their hands. But she still hates him just enough to be able to swallow down the guilt, so she lets Basira threaten him and swears that she won’t let any of her victims make it back to the Institute with their stories.

Actually, they're right, in a way. But when they ask, Jon gets all nervous and awkward and keeps saying something about "rats in the tunnels"
OR; Jon finds out that 14 versions of him are hiding in the tunnels under the Magnus institute until they'll be able to go back to their universes, and they're making his life as hard as it possible while being harmless (for the most part) (maybe)

Jon stayed quiet for a long time, once Martin had updated him up to that point, so much so that Martin took a second to take the phone away from his ear and glance at the screen, just to make sure the call hadn’t dropped during his stammered monologue.
“...Martin.”
“Look, I know!” Martin snapped, a little plaintive, before Jon could prime himself up for a scolding. He was very, very good at those. “I know. You told me it was a bad idea to go back there at night, alone, but-- This is just what we do here, ok? It’s our job, for how unconventional it might be--”
“Breaking and entering is your job?” Jon asked, and the bare hint of amusement in his voice felt like a pleasant summer breeze. “I could’ve sworn you said something about archiving.”
“Jon,” Martin muttered, his annoyance more for show than anything else. It still landed as intended, making Jon chuckle warmly in his ear.

"So the Archivist ate Jon," Melanie starts, eyes fixed on weak lightbulb so they won't fall on the scalpel in her hand. "That's what you said."
"I said I am Jon. And that I ate him." The Archivist turns a page, not even looking up. "Metaphysically, for the most part."
"Sure. Whatever." She exhales out the urge to swing the scalpel in an arc, to follow through like a conductor until it meets skin. It would be so easy. "So if...if the Slaughter eats me. I'll Become. Something. Or. Or it Becomes me."
"Not exactly." The Archivist taps the rocky floor, glancing over at her. She doesn't dare tear her eyes from the lightbulb, not with the scalpel in her hand. "The Slaughter might eat you. But to really Become, you'd have to eat the Slaughter back."

Summary
After the end of the end of the world, Jon and Martin end up in the same place the Entities do—which is to say, everywhere. The problem is, they’ve never been everywhere before, and it’s not as easy as it looks. While they would very much like to help the innumerable worlds that they doomed to the predation of the Dread Powers, they don’t have much practice at influencing reality through spooky books, monsters, or spacetime manipulation. That doesn’t mean they don’t try their best.
Elsewhere, in one of these innumerable worlds, Jon finds a book. It tells him to fall in love, and also, to invest in a cement mixer.

He is absolutely positive that the average human person is not supposed to be exposed to so much Martin Blackwood for such a long time. Not that long, in actual seconds, but again, and again, and again, and again? Watching him say the exact same thing, with only the tiniest of variation, having his mannerisms and the tone of his voice practically driven into his skull? He will go bonkers, soon enough. He’s learning far too much about Martin than he ever wanted to.
