The avian only shrugged. “I’d say it was red life instincts, but I’m pretty sure being red is supposed to make you want to fight more, not less,” Grian offered unhelpfully. “I just call it Scar instincts.”

Summary
Scar can’t answer, too busy trying to control his breathing. It was Grian who had helped him build their home in the desert. It was Grian who had chosen to stay by his side, even after he didn’t have to anymore. It was Grian who had sat on the mountain with him, pointing out the stars and naming them.
It was Grian who had looked at him when they were the only two left, and had said there had to be a winner. It was Grian who had led him back to their mountain, hand in hand, and beat him to death in the shifting sands.
Grian remembered none of it.
OR,
The prize of the victor is to forget what they had to do to win. This causes problems for Scar, who has developed a fear of Grian and can’t tell him why. -

Summary
It's a classic tale of love: Grian, a mer from the depths of the sea, makes a deal with a sea witch to exchange his voice for a pair of legs and go visit the human whose life he had saved. Only in this case, Grian is more interested in the sea witch than the human.
(If only someone had bothered to tell Scar, the sea witch in question, about this divergence).

High on the thrill of having contributed to taking three people's lives, he turned to Scar as his mad cackling petered out, and blurted out, "Let's get married."
Scar turned to him, and said, "What?" in between giggles, still coming down from the adrenaline rush.
Scott said, "What?" in the tone of a man who'd utterly lost the plot and wasn't sure where he'd gotten turned around.
Grian's brain screamed, WHAT?! in betrayal at what words had just come from his own mouth.
Grian replayed his words in his head, and blushed, because that had not been something he'd been intending to say. Before he could take the words back, however, Scar was nodding. "Okay, sure," Scar said casually, like it was common to be proposed to by your henchman right after you'd just blown up three people. "Like, right now?"
Grian.exe was malfunctioning. "Um, sure," he said, brain blank. "Yeah. Let's do it now."

Scar pulled up his chat history with Grian one final time. Each of his messages were still lacking replies. Each still completely unread.
"No." Scar said sternly. "I'm coming with you."
Pearl seemed surprised by his reply, but she made no objection.
"Xisuma?" Scar said, holding the comm up to his ear once again.
"Scar, what is going on? Why are you and Pearl still there?"
Scar didn't answer his question, he only kept talking. "Cub owes me a favor. Tell him to take care of Jellie while I'm gone."
Before X could say anything back, Scar had hung up. He looked back up at Pearl, a strong feeling of determination settling in his bones.
"I'm not jumping to Season 10 yet. Not unless it's with Grian."
Pearl nodded, understanding him perfectly. "Then let’s go find him."

Or, Scar wakes up the morning after Secret Life ends to find that Grian is missing. On top of that, despite being the winner, his memories of all the past games haven’t returned to him. Him and the other previous winners of the traffic games suspect something is up, so they all hatch a plan to get Grian back and end the cycle of death games once and for all.

Summary
Grian wasn’t one to play with fire, but the rush of power that came with what they had just done, wiping a faction off the map on a whim, it was inebriating. The way the sand cleaned the blood off his talons as he walked, how the smoke smelled of wood and coal and flesh, how any scrapes and burns he suffered would be gone by morning while they would not wake up from theirs. It wasn’t just Scar’s reputation anymore. Now there was a bloody reputation waiting for both of them, causing fear and respect. His dynamite would destroy his every enemy, Scar’s politics would tell him where to set the next bomb. Together they could take over the entire wasteland.

In order to find help to build his faction in the desert, Scar purchases Grian's contract for indentured servitude. Though Grian hates having to build for Scar, he finds opportunity for empowerment when Scar asks for his help in a battle—and for his expertise with explosives. Though he may be bound to do Scar's bidding, he finds ways to grasp power for himself, both in the wasteland and from Scar himself.

They’ve had time to cope, but even a year is a short amount of time to comprehend all those lost memories. She isn’t naïve- the Hunter she knows isn’t cool in the conventional sense, but…

She is the one reason he’s alive, and so many of the reasons he wishes he weren’t. She hurts him, but never as much as he wants her to, never enough to soothe his pain. She is the only person on this island that he doesn’t hate, and he thinks this is the closest thing to love he can have now.
She has succeeded in molding him, but he doesn’t think she’s happy with the result. He is dried clay and sharp pottery shards all in too many pieces to put back together. It doesn’t stop her from trying.
