He brushed the gray flecks from his arm, but paused, marvelling at the sting it left behind. It felt like control. He stared at the cigarette, slowly burning out in his hand.
Taking a deep breath, steeling himself for the impending pain, he quickly jabbed the hot cherry into the meat of his arm.

The words tore out of Ilya with such loud, explosive force, he even startled himself with it, taking a step back and leaning his back against the door.
The world stopped spinning for a whole minute.
Shane blinked slowly, wrecking his brain like he misheard. “You… loved me?”
or, in which hockey prodigy Shane and Russian figure skater Ilya, who first met at an athlete development program for teenagers, collide again at the Olympics after years of not seeing each other. There, they are forced to confront who they almost were... to each other.

Summary
At first, Ilya was reckless with it.
He would find an open expanse of skin and scratch with his nails until he drew blood. Find a sharp object and grip it till his hand starts to ooze red down his wrists. Skating more aggressively, hoping to get hit back with so much force he blacked out.
It started when he was twelve, after his mother died.
After a few years of getting used to his new team and eventually becoming captain, his cutting morphed into something more punishing and less noticeable, or at least he thought. Drinking himself to the point that no memories of the night before stuck with him. Taking women and men up on their offers to fuck despite feeling disgusted with himself after the deed was done. Entertaining a group of party goers by doing a line with them, although he himself never had an interest in coke.
However, something did change throughout the years. He took on a more regular hookup. Someone who had the chance to see his body more than once, someone who could remember his body, someone who had the chance to see what Ilya had done to himself.

The day before his discharge, the door to his room swung open and clicked softly closed. No doubt it would be his mom with more questions for the nurses about his outpatient care or news about the private occupational therapist she hired. Shane wasn’t interested in talking about either, especially to his mom, who had put on an obnoxious mask of false optimism.
“You like baseball?”
Shane’s eyes snapped open so fast, the room started spinning in a blur. When his vision focused, Ilya stood at the end of his bed, wearing a beanie and a Boston Bruin sweatshirt. From here, Shane could smell the ugly stink of nicotine. He must have been smoking in the parking lot. The scent was so reassuringly familiar, he forgot to chastise Ilya for it. Lethargically, Shane noticed the creased lines of his forehead and penetrating worry in his blue eyes.
Body sagging heavily to the right, Shane dragged himself up and rested against his pillows. Moving hurt, as if the strenuous effort it took wasn’t humiliating enough. Reaching for the remote, Shane switched the TV off with a trembling hand. In that moment, he wished Ilya never came.
“You are shaking.” Rozanov observed acutely.
“It’s involuntary.” He said.

On January 10th, at approximately 3:29 a.m., a single-vehicle collision occurred on the overpass of Charlesgate over Commonwealth Ave. Witnesses at the scene and surveillance footage indicate a an orange Porsche 718 Cayman traveling northbound on Charlesgate, in the rightmost lane on the Phillip G. Bowker Overpass. Footage shows the vehicle veering suddenly off the overpass at high speeds, colliding with a nearby tree. The driver, male, approximately mid-to-late twenties, was injured and unresponsive when authorities arrived. Airbag w/out seatbelt deployed successfully. Driver was quickly transported to Massachusetts General Hospital for treatment, there identified as Ilya Grigoryevich Rozanov. No other vehicles or pedestrians were involved in the collision.

“Come on, come on, pick up, pick up, pick up,” he begged under his breath.
Hayden watched him with silent concern.
There was a beep over the phone, “Hi, this is Ilya; I will never listen to your voicemail.”
Shane hung up and checked the time. It was barely early evening in Moscow; Ilya should’ve answered.
He hit the call button again. This time, the beep was practically immediate.
“Hi, this is Ilya-”
He called again.
“Hi, this is-”
Shane hung up and buried his head in his hands. This couldn’t be happening.
