Unacceptable. The Most Beautiful Man in the World cringes at the barking, scooting further away from the door through a sea of a dozen broken eggs and leaving a yolky trail in his wake.
“Fuck,” he whimpers, curling into a ball, both hands wrapped around the back of his neck as if to—as if to protect himself, Lan Zhan realizes. “Fuck, fuck, fuck, please—” The Most Beautiful Man in the World begs, voice ragged. He’s definitely hyperventilating now, from what Lan Zhan can tell between the audible sobs. There’s another bark from outside, and The Most Beautiful Man in the World flinches bodily, making a terrified sound that Lan Zhan feels behind his ribs.
Or: A meet ugly, a dog, and the beginning of something wonderful.

Ye Baiyi had a plan. After washing his hands of Wen Kexing and Zhou Zishu, he was going to swing by the mountain to see if those two idiots succeeded in opening the treasury then go from town to town, eating and drinking his fill (he is never full) until his long awaited death grasped his old, ornery heart and freed him from this prison. Simple, foolproof.
But instead of sitting in a warm restaurant and drinking it dry, he’s holed up inside a shabby safehouse on the side of the mountain with a trembling, wounded scorpion who seems determined to die.
Ye Baiyi allows himself a long suffering sigh. He’s earned the right.

Zhou Zishu feels a lump in his throat that might be guilt. He sits there for a long time before speaking. “Well,” he says, and when the words finally come out they don’t sound accusatory, just resigned. A simple statement of the facts. “I never thought you would lie to me like that. So I guess we were both wrong.”
Wen Kexing's face goes unnaturally rigid—the way someone might look if they were trying very hard not to flinch.
Or, some things, once broken, aren’t so easily mended.

“Lan Jingyi,” he finally manages, with a shaky breath, “reminded me that I… that I could. Wear white. For mourning. I never did my one hundred days of mourning for… for shijie, for Wen Qing.”
Lan Zhan makes a little noise in the back of his throat.
“I didn’t…” Wei Wuxian inhales, exhales. Breathe. “I had never… thought about that. I don’t remember being dead, Lan Zhan. It feels like… like three weeks ago, I woke up to Wen Qing and Wen Ning gone. Three weeks since shijie took that blade for me. Since… and it hasn’t been three weeks, but I…”
