Summary
What Arthur knows: Merlin, his clumsy and foolish servant, is actually quite smart. He’s also loyal, and brave, and in many ways the reason Arthur has so many good people in his life.
The goal: Make Merlin realize how important he is to Arthur, no matter how stubborn he's clearly chosing to be about it.
What Arthur does not know, yet: Merlin has magic. Also they're very slightly a little bit in love.
It's going to take them a while to figure it all out. Meanwhile the knights have known for ages, Gwen figures it out pretty quick, and pretty much all of Camelot has also known ever since that weird peasant stumbled through the gates and challenged the Prince all those years ago.

He knows it’s not the pyre, knows there’s much worse, but banishment would mean staying away from Arthur forever – and, as pathetic as that might sound, he thinks he would rather die than let that happen. It is clear that the feeling is not reciprocated, clear that in Arthur’s eyes, he will never come first. There’ll always be people coming before him, and he’s made peace with that long ago – but if even Agravaine can come before him, then anyone could, no? Anyone could replace him. Call Merlin a traitor and have Arthur get rid of him. Anyone could.Merlin no longer feels safe in Camelot.

Summary
When they arrive at the kingdom Merlin can already tell something’s wrong.
Which isn’t great because now the others can tell that he feels something wrong and he’s being an inconvenience because they have more important things to focus on.
He tries telling Lancelot that when the knight notices he’s falling behind a little bit but Lancelot just has him breathe a few times and tells him that if it’s worrying him, they’ll listen.
He tries telling Arthur that but Arthur just listens to him patiently and assures them they’ll keep their eyes open, thank you for being on guard.
Which is rude because Arthur says it in the gentle voice that he only uses for Merlin and he has to smile at Merlin like he’s something precious and something to be protected and Merlin is far too overwhelmed with actual panic right now to worry about gay panic.
In which lords are crafty, truth spells are pesky, and secrets don't hurt as much as we thought.

“No, idiot. Spirit animals don’t get along unless they belong to their soulmate. If my bird sees your hideous lion-“
“He is quite dashing, thank you. Besides, your bloody bird is too loud-“
“My bird is just trying to do me a favor and tune you out!” Arthur snapped and took a long breath “The point is they can’t be around each other. So unless you want Emmy to pluck out this lion’s eyes I suggest you tell him to bugger off.” He snapped. Merlin was inclined to tell Arthur to bugger off himself, but was immediately distracted by one word.
“Emmy?” He repeated and smiled. “You did name him.”
