Summary
When Madara awoke, he had expected darkness.
Caught off guard on a mission gone awry, injured, and trapped in a blizzard, he had been easy pickings for a party of Hagoromo Kekeii Genkai traders. Though he put up a fight, it was ultimately useless. He was poisoned, his eyes taken, and then left to bleed out in the snow. He had expected death at best, and blindness at worst.
He had not expected to wake up in his clan's medical ward, eyes still fixed in his skull, healed, and with a fresh soul mark on his cheek.

Slade being impenetrable but having a heart was a great side plot.

But it never came, because when Shen Jiu managed to look up, all he could see was a man’s broad back swathed in black robes, his grip tight around Qiu Jianluo’s wrist.

The orders were simple: clear the premises, leave nobody alive. The Faceless Ones, the team of Special Forces operatives given the task, took their mission as seriously as they always had and settled into their places outside of the Russian terrorist base, ready to level the building. Demolitionist Henry Skylark had his finger on the button; Captain Bridger O'Neil was preparing to give the final order for everything to come down.
Something changed, right before it was all supposed to go down. A new set of orders crackled through their comms, instructing them instead to go inside and attempt to take hostages-- they needed any information they could get.
But, instead of information, Sergeant Shane Maynard stumbles onto something none of them can explain: a young man, chained up in a cold, empty room. He looks to young to be a prisoner of war; all other explanations are too horrible to speak aloud.
What they think is the true reason is worse than any of them can admit-- until they find out the information that changes everything.

Oscar is complex here, and he truly comes into his monstrousness. He is the opposite of flat or cold. There's something compelling about someone being so wholly unapologetic. And sometimes relationships do flame out, without true resolution. A little sad and very real.
