The entire thing seems strange to him but it also feels like an out of body experience, like he’s witnessing a train crash instead of experiencing it firsthand.
“Merlin, you absolute idiot!” Arthur yells. He just needs to get through this phone call and then he can go curl up in a ball and die. That’s all, one phone call shouldn’t be too hard, should it? “I’m not fucking breaking up with you, you—you clotpole!”

“I want you to do whatever it is that makes you happy,” He holds his hand up when Arthur begins to object. “No, forget about Morgana and your father and everyone else and focus on you alone. They all have their own lives to live, Arthur, but this is yours. You’re the one who’s going to have to put in the work and years from now, this is what you’re going to spend your days doing. Do you honestly want to be a politician or a lawyer or a doctor? Is that something you think can make you happy? Or will it make you wake up everyday, hating your life?”
Arthur’s silent for a long time before he speaks.
“It doesn’t matter what I want. What I want is stupid and Morgana’s right, if I can do something to help people then I should.”
Merlin steps closer to cup Arthur’s face in his hands, forcing Arthur to look directly at him.
“I’ll ask again, what do you want to do?”

He knew what he had to do. It’s the same thing he should have done three years ago. He was unwilling then to put Merlin above his father–to put anyone above his father. He let Merlin go because as long as he had Merlin, he couldn’t have Uther.
He knew he was making a huge mistake and yet he still made it. He told himself he could do it, that he could live the life Uther wanted him to and still be happy because at the end of the day, he’d still have his father and his sister but he was wrong. Family wasn’t only those who shared his blood.

Arthur squeezed his eyes shut. “You’ve always been his.” Gwaine looked a little like child who had been caught doing something he shouldn’t, but he said nothing while Arthur continued. “Your loyalty has always been to him. Can I ask you this one last thing? Go with him, wherever he goes, I can’t bear the thought of him being hurt.”
“He will be safe here,” Gwaine said, softly.
