A name that made dictators quake, now reduced to a campus guard who kicked the coffee machine whenever it ate his coins. Each night he wandered the empty halls of Nevarran University, torch in hand, resigned to another dull shift with only the shadows, and Spite, for company. Until one night, a thin strip of light bled from beneath an office door.
Professor Emmrich Volkarin, PhD. Parapsychology. Titles meant little to Lucanis, but staff hours were staff hours. He slipped a reminder note under the door and carried on, only to find, on his next loop, that the professor had left him a reply.

A young Crow from House de Riva wants to prove themselves, or maybe just survive. Lucanis Dellamorte wants to do a favour for Viago by keeping his protege alive. The pair's cover story takes them into the interior of Antiva, where a haunted estate—along with Antivan noble politics—threatens to put the contract at risk. Doubly so, when something in the Fade takes a special interest in Lucanis.
All the two Crows really need to do is kill a target, stop a Magister from becoming a god, and not get eaten along the way. They'll both need to face their inner demons if they want to make it home alive... let alone intact.

It caught her off guard, this sudden realization. Lucanis was not a man given to adornment or display; he was careful, reserved, a shadow that moved silently between light and darkness. Yet beneath that careful exterior, the silver seemed to pull something from him that few had ever seen — something fragile, almost ethereal.
A thought came to her then, like insistent whisper: he should have more. More silver, more little touches of light to catch and hold in the darkness.
