Summary
The servants' hall continues to empty as Downton Abbey approaches 1930. Thomas, resentful in spite of himself, has little enthusiasm put by for the film people coming to stay.
But film star Guy Dexter brings along a rather mysterious person, whose job title no one can quite pin down. And both the evasive Mr. Ellis and the winning Mr. Dexter are keenly interested in bringing Thomas into a greater understanding of what life is like outside of Downton Abbey.

“Did he tell you he’s getting married?”
This, Thomas hadn’t expected, though experience had given him little excuse not to.
“Oh,” he breathed. The weight of Guy’s words settled unpleasantly. “He didn’t tell me, no.”
Resentment crept into his voice, though whether it had a right to do so, he couldn’t say. Mr. Ellis had never approached him with anything but friendliness—certainly never promised anything else.
“I’m sure he meant to,” Guy said lightly. “He forgets, sometimes. What I think is, he spends so much time thinking things over, he doesn’t realize no one else has been around for any of it.”
There was amusement in his voice, but there was also something like a plea for understanding. A desire for Thomas to understand. A fear that he might not.

[Richard] was teasing him. Well, Thomas could play that game.
“Then you were his valet,” he said, raising a brow and taking a sip of his drink. He studied Mr. Ellis, watched his eyes move slowly across the room, taking in who was there. Who might be listening in, perhaps.
Maybe he was only buying time to think up his next clever answer.
“It depends on how you look at things,” he said.

Summary
After the royal visit, life barely returns to normal at Downton Abbey. Familiar faces from the past come back to haunt the current occupants, and once again Downton plays host to an unwelcome guest. Stuck in the middle of all of it, Thomas Barrow must come to terms with what it means to be a flawed human being, and lay to rest all the demons of his youth.

Summary
Something must have happened to his brain when he'd tried to kill himself, a lack of oxygen or something, and now he was hallucinating all the people who had died at Downton Abbey. Lady Sybil and William and Mr Pamuk, that was just his guilty mind playing tricks on him. The others were just from stories he had heard during his time at the Abbey. The Black Monk and Grey Lady. That must be it, and it was probably only temporary. He only wished the ghosts knew that so they would leave him alone.

Thomas sees the man’s eyes widen, sees realization dawning on him in the matter of a split second, and he looks down, twisting Thomas’ arm sharply to reveal the undeniable evidence etched into his skin.
