Summary
Hob knows he is dreaming. He's had similar dreams a few times before.
In these dreams he is a knight, a seasoned warrior clad in well-worn leathers and finely crafted armor, weariness and exhaustion weighing him down heavier than the plate on his shoulders and back. Sometimes he’s returning from a battle, covered in dirt, blood and sweat – but never wounded, just tired. Sometimes he’s returning from faraway lands, with head full of stories and images of breathtaking places that have no ability to exist in the waking world.
Sometimes he’s just– returning.

Hob is most of the way through his introductory lecture on pre-1800s English literature, sweating gamely underneath the combination of overhead lights and an unseasonably warm September, when he feels the gaze lingering on him.
Hob smiles – he can’t help it. His husband’s visits are almost always unplanned, but always welcome. He’s not sure what an eternal personification of dreams and nightmares will get out of this particular lecture, but he’s happy, in the meantime, to let his eyes drink their fill, and to feel Dream’s regard on him like a lover’s arms.

Summary
Although she hears it constantly, Death knows it's not truly her fault when mortals' time comes to pass. She may help ferry them, but she does not kill them - not truly. She may help with the circumstances, she may help nudge them, but she doesn't murder anyone. Her function was the most natural part of every mortal's life. She took joy in her function.
Which would never change. Shouldn't change.
Except it does. All of it does. Everything comes falling down and apart when it's not Dream that's taken by Roderick but Death. And it's Death who suffers his hospitality, and it's Death who is faced with a choice every week to let a man die or save Randall.
Every day, she's called a murderer. Death is not... she won't... but perhaps for Roderick and company, when she is free, she'll make an exception... and she's certain she'll take quite a bit of joy from it.

Summary
Hob Gadling is recently divorced and not in a good mental place when Dream walks into the New Inn over thirty years late for their appointment.
So, instead of warmly welcoming Dream, Hob decides to finally give him a piece of his mind. As far as he's concerned, it's Dream's turn to be the good friend if he wants Hob back in his life.
He was not expecting Dream to take him up on that challenge.

Summary
Hob saves Dream from his imprisonment but is shot several times in the process. He manages to break the glass ball, but when he wakes up he is in his own bed, bleeding and with no memory of what happened after that. He doesn't know if his friend is alright, doesn't know what happened to him, and he goes a bit crazy with worry.
Eventually, Dream comes back to Hob and, after that, they start to meet more often until they become part of each other's lives. However, this new closeness will be threatened by old mistakes and fighting ancient powers is never easy.

He cuts off his own question, realising Hob has walked off too far to hear him, and sits down on the stepstool in wait. He closes his eyes, feeling tension evaporate from his shoulders as he sinks into the familiar smell of rosewood and scented freshener, the warm lights painted on the back of his eyelids, the thrumming of the room's heater running under his feet.
Or, Hob figures out a way to save Dream.
