    Time opened his eye to a world on fire. The bittersweet smell of smoke forced its way into his lungs, and he coughed. Above him, where the roof used to be, was the moon, just as terrible and big as it had been in Termina. It filled Time’s vision.
    “Oh, thank Hylia you’re awake.”
    Time reluctantly peeled his eye from the giant red one in the sky and looked at the person in front of him. Warriors. His blond hair swayed gently in the breeze. The plate armor reflected the red light. His blue scarf was slightly torn by the hem. In his hand was a sword, ready to defend them both if needed. Time thought Warriors looked more like the typical storybook hero than Time ever had.

    Ten different versions of how the Chain met. The first nine chapters will feature a story in which eight of the Links meet their last member. The last one will feature a story about how all of them meet at once. Title may be subject to change.

    When most of the Links changed worlds, they would experience an ache in the gums, ringing ears, general instability or perhaps a persistant headache.

    Four, however, was affected far worse. He would start shaking, be unable to put pressure on certain limbs or feel from parts of his body, once or twice he even experienced mild deafness and moderate blindness (along with prolonged or heightened versions of the other’s symptoms). All of this, mind you, is if he didn’t just pass out.

    The others had no clue why. They accommodated him as best as they could, carrying him when he couldn’t walk, and being patient when he couldn’t cooperate. For this, Four was extremely thankful, although he just wanted a break at this point.

    Said someone else promptly goes sprawling, and Link sees it’s a kid. He peers up at Link with hazel eyes blown wide, seemingly frozen where he fell.

    Link’s heart gives a pang when he processes how skinny the kid is. His wrist bones jut out of threadbare sleeves, cheeks thin, and Link can count his ribs from here. He can also see the fear painted on the kid’s features, plain as day.

    Link raises his hands on instinct, taking a small step back to reassure the kid. “Ah, ‘m real sorry ‘bout that,” he offers, keeping his voice low. He carefully drops to a knee, making sure he’s just as disadvantaged as the kid is, and reaches out a hand up. “You alri—?”

    Warriors even managed to get a single tear roll down his face.

    Twilight has had a very bad several weeks.

    Well, wait— waking up in that grove wasn’t that bad. It was the cryptic warning that he got from what he thinks was a goddess immediately afterwards that was bad. And then his birthmark glowing, then dying, then the unexplainable sadness that followed. Yeah, that was bad. But meeting Wild was wonderful. The fact that he was somehow Twilight’s brother was even better.

    And the stable was… okay. At least until they tried to take Wild. That… that hurt in more ways than one. (Twilight still can’t breathe right—)

    At least the woods are pretty. They’re cold. And a bit dark. And… scary. But at least they’re pretty. Even if he and Wild are hungry all the time.

    But the new people— the new grownups. They’re not okay. Nuh uh. It doesn’t matter if they seem really, really nice, or if they keep leaving toys, or blankets, or food—

    No. No, the grownups are not okay, because Twilight will never make that mistake again. Grownups are bad. Scary. They hurt.

    And Twilight will never let grownups close to them again.

    Or: a child Twi and Wild fic, but with a ✨twist✨. And a whole lot of angst.
