    The Lazarus Pit always takes something from its victims. Usually, it's sanity, memories, emotional regulation, or a combination of the three. It doesn't often take a person's humanity and warp their body beyond recognition.

    Seems like Jason Todd is the (un)lucky winner of such an opportunity! When the teenager wakes to a second chance at life, he is forced to live in the body of a monster. Yay!
    To survive, he must uncover the limits and powers his new form holds, all while trying to avoid unwanted attention. When he returns home, things only get more difficult. His family actively hunts him, people are terrified by his very presence, and rogues try to catch him for their own uses.

    People fear what they don't understand. Villains hate what they can't control. Vigilantes detain what they think is dangerous.

    There is no place for inhuman monsters in Gotham, but surviving by yourself is lonely. Maybe taking Batman's new little bird under his wing will help somehow?

    OR

    The one where Jason gets turned into an animalistic cryptid and has to survive Gotham being...well Gotham. Oh, Tim's there too. He's sad, but he thinks that having a cryptid best friend would be pretty cool.

    Over time, the family managed to find some sort of.. dynamic.

    He didn’t really mind, more often feeling apathetic.

     

    Until he’d gotten caught off guard one day on patrol, and ended up hurt. It didn’t really matter to him, but Hood had stuck behind, insisting to see it.

    “C’mon Replacement, we don’t have all day. Just let me walk you home.”

    Tim huffed, refraining from pouting as his injured hand stayed hidden. “Fine.”

    All it was was a guy trying to choke him out, and maybe a little bit of stabbing, he was fine!

    Okay, maybe he felt a little dizzy and lightheaded, but he’d be fine!

     

    Tim was brought to one of his safe houses, and he couldn’t help but wonder why Hood had stayed.

    “Why are you still here?”

    Jason, now with his mask off, stared at him incredulously. “Seriously? You were off your game, Timbers. For fucks sake, you were being strangled! If I hadn’t arrived–”

    “I killed him.” With shaking a hand, Tim pointed at the man breathing unsteadily on the ground. The pool of blood beneath his head was growing larger. “I hit him too hard, I didn’t mean to, it was an accident!” He was rambling, he knew, but this was bad.

    “What?” Jason sounded genuinely perplexed, but also angry. Though, Tim supposed in his half-dazed mind, Jason always sounded vaguely angry. “What the fuck are you talking about, Replacement?”

    “Bruce,” Tim gasped out. “He’s— he’s gonna hate me. I’m sorry, I’m sorry—”

    “Hey!” Jason’s sharp bark snapped Tim back to himself. He was shaking, but Jason’s hand was steady on his shoulder. “Baby bird. Look at me.”

    “I killed him!” Tim jerked away from Jason, but the older man held him firmly. “I don’t wanna get kicked out, I can’t go through that again—”

    Jason didn’t let him finish. With a swing of his arm and a deafening gunshot, Jason buried a bullet in the man’s head.

    “There,” he said, shrugging. “You didn’t kill him. I did.”

    Tim was hyperventilating.

    At the thought of his parents returning, a smile broke out across his face as childish excitement filled his body. It had been quite a long time since he had seen his parents.

    Tim loves Christmas because it means the promise his parents will come home and he gets to watch as the loving communities that come together during the holidays finally meets his own home. However, as Christmas arrives he gets a phone call that makes him question how much his parents value their promise, as he's left alone in his dark home for Christmas.

    When Tim Drake finally manages to convince a reluctant Bruce Wayne to let him don the infamous red, yellow, and green Robin suit, he is ecstatic. So what if their relationship is strained at best, and borderline toxic at worst? It accomplishes what Tim set out to do, which was to dial back the anger-fueled vengeance Bruce had been unleashing on Gotham after Jason Todd's unfortunate death. If he can channel that anger against him to reduce casualties on the streets, he's more than willing to accept the risk for the sake of the public. Unfortunately, the world has other plans, and when poor Tim is gassed with fear toxin in an abandoned warehouse, the feelings Bruce has been trying to choke down come to light in full surge.

    Or, Tim gets dosed with fear toxin, and Bruce is left to pick up the pieces. A sequel to Have You Heard? (About The Flightless Birds?) But from Bruce's point of view. Don't need to read the first one to read this one.

    Batman will never admit it, but he did need another Robin. He required the happiness a child brought to his life, both inside and outside the mask. Since the death of his second son, Jason Todd, Bruce Wayne's life had been spiraling deeper into depression and pain, clouding his judgment. He was convinced that little Tim Drake, who lives next door, is nothing but a hindrance to him and will only get himself killed, just like Jason. So he pushes his new Robin away, holds him at arm's length, and refuses to allow himself to care again in a desperate attempt to save himself the heartbreak. That is, until his little bird gets gassed by fear toxin in an old warehouse, and it's revealed Tim's greatest fear is none other than Batman. It shouldn't have taken this much for Bruce to realize he does care, more than his heart can take, but better late than never, right?

    Or, Tim finds him self under the influence of fear toxin and doesn't handle it as well as he hoped. Tim's POV
