Ever since they lost those three years, Keith has been certain that Shiro is dead. He must be, he already didn’t have long before he lost out on the Kerebros mission. But when they finally touch down, there he is. He looks older than he should, his jaw is covered with rough stubble that he never would have allowed before, and his hair is shaggy and almost pure white, a little past his shoulders now, with only a streak of black left over one eye. He’s so thin it’s scary, and his strong right arm is an atrophied claw contracted over his chest, the hand settled like it’s holding his heart, but when he sees Keith he beams, the same radiant smile as ever, and he comes running over almost as fast as he used to, left arm pulling Keith into a rough hug.

Keith has always dreamt of the night sky. He floats in it, drifting aimlessly in the liquid night. There are lions there, not the wild lions he would occasionally see hunting prey just past his territory, but colorful and well groomed lions. They pounce and play together, and with Keith too. Just not the black one, their Alpha, Keith’s Alpha. He is too old and prideful for anysort of cub play, but he doesn't mind. Keith walks up to him eventually in every dream. They hunt and groom like mates do.

My guiding stars in the night. The lion would nuzzle Keith’s red fur and stare deeply into his eyes.

Summary
So there’s no real choice when Keith spots one of the containers of quintessence left unguarded in the midst of another scuffle between the paladins and the sentries. Gathering the energy he has left, he throws himself toward the quintessence.
There’s no time to think about it. He cups his hand and brings a handful to his mouth, trying to swallow about as much as he thinks he’s been taking in the lab, conscious of the very real possibility that there must be an amount that could lead to an overdose.
The effect is immediate, even faster than he remembers, and the corresponding crash is something he can worry about later.
