I knew already though.

Summary
Ponyboy's parents attempted to carve out a life in the Oklahoma panhandle instead of Tulsa. This is a mistake; they wind up being swept up in the Dust Bowl, killed as bandits and their children are left in Darry's care.
Eventually, after the death of his best friend Johnny Cade in the dusty Oklahoma landscape, Ponyboy finds out that Darrel Curtis Sr. is not his biological father. This forces him to make a choice, fleeing to Los Angeles to pursue a career not just as a pulp novelist, but as a screenwriter.
This leads him to three things: his biological family by way of Atreus Pelopides, his father; his future mate, former Capone and Luciano associate, Dallas Winston; and eventually, making the movie Days of Glory, a movie made to help strengthen Soviet-US relations during WWII, as Allies.
It's Days of Glory that winds up being the reason Ponyboy is eventually dragged to Congress to answer a pertinent question: Was he, or is he, a member of the Communist Party? And would he name names?

Summary
Three years before, Randy Adderson had gone away for simple financial crimes, not for being a Satanist. But, Ponyboy feels his stomach turning, looking at the bloodied pentagram in front of him, left in the wake of Randy's escape from prison.
It doesn't seem to make sense with the Soc turned hippie turned stool pigeon.
Thankfully, there's someone there to help him out: a man calling himself Dallas, with a sharp, canine grin, eyes that flash red in the light, and insists that he's not human anymore — and that he's there to help Ponyboy out.
Which would be a lot easier if they could keep their hands off of each other.

The reality of the situation was that they were moving away because Lucille LaRusso-Cade made an impulsive decision to ditch her husband. She just couldn't stand to deal with that monster anymore, and she wasn't going to subject her sons to him either. So as soon as she got a job offer and a place to live far from Jersey, she packed up her kids and what belongings would fit in the station wagon, withdrew everything from her joint bank account, and set out for Tulsa Oklahoma.

He was surprised when he woke up after overdosing, Ponyboy next to him with tears running down his cheeks. He didn't understand what was happening, and in his moment of disorientation, he said something that changed his and Pony's relationship.
Something that would make bets be won and lost, have Ponyboy questioning everything, and him left a mess with his thoughts.

This is essentially a direct sequel to the events of the book, written in Pony's first person POV. It's set in a timeline where Dallas and Johnny each meet a different fate, and we see Ponyboy deal with the way his life and relationships are changing. Including finally acting on his feelings for Johnny. Its not primarily a ship fic, though. That's just a little treat.
Anyway, this first chapter just follows Pony visiting Johnny two-ish months after the fire.
