Summary
A long time ago, a deranged dragon, as massive as his flying castle, and his hoards of minions unleashed unfathomable fury on the land. Two lone heroes, strong as ten regular men and shining bright as rainbows, defeated him and captured him in a glass prison, ensuring the safety of everyone around them.
. . . okay, maybe that story wasn't so long ago. And maybe some elements were embellished. It wasn't that fantastic.
Bowser's defeat in New York was spectacular and did show the people of Brooklyn the plumber brothers had grit, sure, but the damage it left was sprawling. The streets were cracked, homes were destroyed, and infrastructure was completely demolished. The Mushroom Kingdom, while spared a majority of the damage, decided to lend hands and toad-power to other kingdoms to help rebuild.
This left the Mario Brothers, the heroes of Brooklyn and Queens, traveling between worlds to help repair the damage and build relations between kingdoms again.
Oh, and keeping an eye on the Mushroom Kingdom's newest prisoner.It's not until one day that Luigi, by complete accident, finds something in common with the Koopa in a can: an interest in music.

Summary
Lonely in the Mushroom Kingdom and with a limited list of friends, Luigi finds himself accidentally falling into the unexpected company of Bowser. And even though he knows that he shouldn’t, and that it is very wrong, it is easy for someone as timid as him to befriend Bowser when his sworn enemy is shrunken and locked away in a gilded cage.
(At least, until Bowser figures out the loophole for the poison mushroom power-up and escapes, but that’s a whole different issue entirely).

A mobster AU of Super Smash Bros.
The Mario family used to be feared throughout Smash City, nothing happened without a Mario saying it could. But times change. In the wake of a betrayal from within the family, the organization collapsed, and their kingpin Doctor Mario disappeared. With the power vacuum within the city filled by a half-dozen gangs fighting each other for control and bringing the city down with them. The Triforce, the Koopa Clan, Team Rocket, and the Star Gang rule the city now, and the police can't handle them.
Now, people look upon the old days of the Mario Family as good ones, thinking one well-behaved mob was better than four fighting ones. The people are still loyal to the old family, but without a Mario at the head, no one will follow.
