When Sokka was 12 years old, his best friend Zuko came to visit him. Zuko with his golden eyes and burning smile and tumultuous voice that Sokka complained was too loud but loved all the same.
When Sokka was 12 years old, Zuko hugged him goodbye and promised to be back soon, promised they wouldn’t be apart for long, and Sokka hugged him back and said “I know.”
When Sokka was 12, the southern water tribe received a letter regarding Ozai’s imprisonment and Firelord Iroh’s ascension to the throne. The letter had, without sparing a detail, explained in full Ozai’s crimes and what he had done.
When Sokka was 12, he wrote a letter to Zuko explaining how he missed him, and how he was sorry his dad was in prison, and asked if he missed him. Sokka, carefree and unaware of the horrors that plagued the fire nation prince, waited for a reply that never came.

the one where the war goes a little differently, Zuko and Sokka are childhood best friends, Ozai is a piece of shit (whats new) and Zuko struggles to cope with his PTSD and the fact that he may have feelings for the watertribe prince.

Zuko snorts, "If I did that every time I got the urge, nothing would ever get done around here."
"Still, it's impressive! A few years ago, I wouldn't have thought of you as a patient leader, but you really fit the role, Zuko."
Zuko glances over at Sokka from the corner of his eye, "You think so?"
Sokka grins, "I know so! Trust me, I'd tell you if you were doing horrible."
At that, Zuko laughs, and the sound makes Sokka's heart soar. Back when the war was going on, a laugh from Zuko was unheard of. It was hard to even get him to smile. But now, 3 years after Zuko's coronation, his smiles aren't as few and far between as they once were.

Zuko knows he's in love with his best friend. He also knows he can never have him the way his heart wants. He's fine with that, as he keeps telling himself.
Or: 3 years after the war ended, Zuko and Sokka are as close as ever, but both seem to yearn for a little more. One of them just has to realize that their feelings aren't as unrequited as they think.
(Note: later on, this work will include violence, so be warned!)

People often are pleased with the illusion of choice, to feel as if they have control over their perception of the world once it turns its back on them. A wounded dog learns to lap at fresh wounds while at its attacker's side, and a hungrier one knows that the hand that can no longer feed it only becomes an opportunity for bloodlust. Once sweetness is detested, bitterness has already made a home on your pink tongue. When you get a taste of it, no one has complete control over that thumping organ that births butterflies of yearning for self-destruction. There isn’t a single person alive capable of easily ridding the pest of intrusive thoughts that chew at the integral wiring of your brain after you’re let down one too many times. No one can accomplish that.
At least, not alone.

What better place to unpack and navigate your previous trauma than Ranshaw's Haunted Attractions? Sokka and Zuko find comfort in each other when they least expect it.
