On November 23rd, 2004, Light Yagami, age eighteen, pled guilty to over one hundred thousand counts of murder under the alias of Kira. His trial set unprecedented history as the first ever, and likely the last ever, to include non-human entities as key witnesses. Notably, the shinigami Ryuk agreed to testify on Light Yagami’s behalf for quote, “entertainment and a favor to a longtime friend”. Many officers of the law from across the globe have stated that it is a miracle he was even granted a trial in the first place, as there was overwhelming evidence of his crimes, and due to the scale of his trangressions, it was very likely that he would have been simply executed quietly. However, the court seemingly intended to make an example out of him, that even the great and elusive Kira could be captured.

"Abstracted, Light is gazing at the credits running over the dark screen, casting an eerie glow throughout the theatre room; when his eyes narrow, something cruel and deep seems to drift toward the surface. And Ryuzaki is watching Light too, just as caught by that momentary expression, his thumb pressed against his full lips, the sickly bruises under his eyes standing out like something rotten and sagging. The chain seems tacky and weird, you frown and find that your teeth have bitten into your lip and there's blood on your own tongue. Surely it doesn't take a genius to figure out how fucked up this is! But no one listens to Misa-Misa; no one ever listens to the pretty face. At least you're not too worried about Light. He's perfect, and he's smart enough that even if he were Kira, you know he'd never get caught. If L knows what's good for him, he should be the one who's scared to look at Light like that."

It was the end of your boredom, because though you were nothing but a spectator to the great battle, you already felt how Kira and L would pull you along in their wake just as any battle between titans would (because you would stand within the event horizon, if only to get closer).

Summary
L grapples with his demons as his latest case follows the trail of a serial killer with an aptitude for making fine art out of their victims cadavers. Despite his repulsion, L grows a sordid reverence for the perverse genius behind it all.
Perceiving the gravity of L's deteriorating mental health, Watari persuades him to consult Light Yagami, an acclaimed psychologist. Light helps L gain clarity and insight into his own behaviour and the motivations of his case.
As the sessions forge on, L finds himself markedly intrigued by Light and his insights into the murderer, and begins to feel a nascent attraction towards both. As the case comes together, L has a growing conviction that the criminal and Light may even be one and the same.
