Summary
There was little use asking what specific memory was bothering Macaque. One, it was obvious, and two, it didn’t matter. Every thread that tied them together always looped back to encompass it all, turning the happiest memories bitter and cursing the worst of them to remain painful all the years later.
It was their entire existence together- an existence which only got longer, with more knots in the timeline.
Macaque came in some time later, perched more than sitting on the edge of the bed, as though he wasn’t sure he was staying. Wukong propped himself up, the two sitting barely a foot apart. Every breath or gentle rustle of sheets seemed too loud, even to Wukong’s ears.
He laid his palm on Macaque’s shoulder, watching as Macaque twitched but ultimately relaxed under his touch. They were unused to this by now, but nothing was unfamiliar, it was all too familiar and distant at once.
“What’re we doing?” asked Macaque, addressing the floor rather than Wukong.
“I don’t know,” admitted Wukong.

Summary
“Is it bad?” Wukong asks from the other side of the fire, cast in an orange glow. Macaque looks up at him and rolls his eyes.
“Could be worse,” he says. It’s a half truth. It doesn’t feel bad, mostly because the area has already begun to go numb, which might be worse. “Might be poisoned, though. Stupid thing was probably venomous.”
“Shit. Is it…?”
Life-threatening?
Macaque snorts. “Guess we'll have to sit here and find out, huh?”
Or, alternatively: two monkeys walk into a cave.
(In which the best bonding is always involuntary.)

Today is a good day.
At least, that's what the Great Sage, Equal to Heaven, tells himself as he rests his head in a field of grass. In three months the Heavens will demand repayment for the damage Wukong has caused them, and Wukong will find grief and fury to be his only companions left.
But for now his eyes slip closed, enraptured by the beauty of his kingdom.
The weather's warm...trees are primed with fruit...there's endless shade to seek refuge beneath...and there's Macaque, lying peacefully beside him and an orange held in the palm of his hand.
Yeah, today's a good day.
A bit of Shadowpeach fluff because I feel like this fandom doesn't get enough of it.

Summary
He didn’t consider the slope of the figure’s shoulders as they disappeared downward. Didn’t hesitate to shove his arm into the shadowed ground and pull. Didn’t stop when a younger part of him recognized that magic.
“Get off of me!” The shouting was familiar. His voice, usually confident and smooth with the slightest bite, now shook in a way the king hadn’t heard in over a millennium.
Wukong’s mind skittered to a halt. This wasn’t the thief. It couldn’t be.
Or: Someone has stolen a very secret, old possession of Sun Wukong's, and Macaque has insisted on helping him find the culprit. Arguments, hurt feelings, and begrudging reattachments ensue.

Summary
Macaque doesn't even remember how it started. One minute, they were setting the kitchen up to bake a cake for a celebration they couldn't attend. Occasional bickers and backhanded compliments are thrown at each other, as per usual, alongside soupy cake batter and flour clinging onto their fur.
The next, at one blink of his eyes, the kitchen counter's messed up, and petty hurtful words are thrown at each other.
The bridge they've built continues to burn, and Wukong stands with the lighter, Macaque with the gasoline.
alternatively,
Macaque and Wukong live with each other, old traumas re-occur, and as the fucked up creatures they are, heal through fucked up, intangible ways no sane person can properly discern.

Summary
Having lived through everything he had, this part always felt silly. The sitting, the breathing, and the waiting. His life was in no danger. That the logic of that wasn't enough on its own to ease the pain-- or flush out the stress that made his hands shake-- was as unfair as it was ridiculous. Baser instincts that kept a creature alive were vestigial at best when that creature existed beyond the normal laws of mortality, and yet every demon was still bound to them.
Many could avoid fate. But not even heaven, nor its equals, could escape fear.-
Macaque is invited along to celebrate the new year, and errs on the side of proving a point.

Summary
Things were weird. They didn't talk about it.
Macaque was coming by again. The first time had been at night, so soon after they'd both been freed that the ground around them was still littered with jagged ice stalagmites, now inert. They were already melting. They would be gone on their own eventually.
Wukong watched him pummel one into slush.
After a minute, he wordlessly stepped out and helped crush them to puddles with their bare hands. The extent of her influence left the two of them working for the better part of an hour before they could no longer see any on the horizon. Their work done, Macaque had slunk back into the shadows.But he came back. Again, at night. He kept to the trees, nosing into his scarf and whiling the night away reclined and stealing whatever fruit grew at hand. He didn't sleep. Wukong would have been a hypocrite to bring it up. He was gone again come morning, always seeming to slip away when Wukong had his eyes off him.
Night five of that, and Wukong left the shack door ajar.
Night seven, and Macaque came inside.

Summary
Macaque is perfectly fine with disappointing some people by not showing up at MK's hangouts, but he owes it to MK to pay his attendance.
He will, however, disappoint Wukong all night by ignoring him.
Macaque, out of boredom and nothing else, stops ignoring him.
