Evan’s soul hasn’t spoken at all. Not even to the other daemons. Evan is quiet but no daemon is this quiet naturally. A soul speaks even when the human doesn’t.
If that crow were hissing and spitting, cawing and screaming, then the lack of talking would feel less…like this. What kind of a daemon is silent? What kind of a soul is this empty?
It’s fine, Jammer thinks, deciding that it will be true. He lets Witty inch closer to Evan than he normally would and when he guides Evan around by the shoulder there isn’t a single flinch to be found. Just a wild animal stillness.
That’s okay, too. Sometimes a good guy happens to be creepy as shit. Happens to the best.

K lets out a soft wuff of support.
It’s clearly not good enough because Sam’s whole face falls.
K crawls forward, belly still up, and manages to just about paw at Sam’s legs. She lets out a whine of sympathy. Sam does not seem pleased by this for some reason.
K is such a fucking failure.
“HEY, WAIT I CAN DO THAT TOO! WATCH ME BARK, JUST FUCKING WATCH ME!”
“Grrrargh,” says Evan.
K makes a horny sound instead of a dog sound and their misery increases. They are a failure. They are a stain on the face of the very concept of pet-play. They could melt into the fucking ground right now and it would still be more than they deserve because Sam would end up stepping on them.

“WOW,” Remus screams. “I sure hope there are no monsters in this big, scary forest I’m in. It would be just awful if an immortal faerie found my squishy, delicious mortal body!”
The Forest does not respond. Confusion whistles through the nostrils of a wandering field mouse, flowers wilting in faraway meadows as a single leaf flutters down to land on the strange human’s nose.
Remus grunts, licking at his nose to try and get the leaf to fall. “You know,” he says lowly. “I’m so vulnerable here in these big, dark woods. Would be a shame if some ruthless abomination were to invert my ribcage and redefine the meaning of ‘horse.’ Wow. Would be a crying shame — how unfortunate that I am currently carrying a bottle of oil, tied up to this rugged tree and crying out for help.”
The Forest shudders, all at once, in the raised hackles of a stolen hunting hound and the sudden cry of a cuckoo bird.
“Please,” Remus pouts. “No, seriously, guys. I have so much oil on me, you could literally stick a log up my ass, it is amazing how much lube I brought. You’d be surprised what you can get when you know how to clone the right herbs.”

“It’s really cute, Virge, I don’t know what you expect me to say,” Roman delivers the finishing blow with zero remorse and a flushed, glowing face. “Do you want to make a liar out of me?” they cock their head to the side, pupils blown wide and smile displaying odd teeth made of snow-glitter. “I call it as I see it and it,” they peck aer on the cheek. “Is precious.”
Virgil growls out. “Rude. Spiteful, even.”
