Agni’s flames flared, flickering and earnest as they judged this fight. A century of fear had stolen this land, torn this beloved nation apart and divided its people from their spirits. They claimed to stand in Agni’s light, to dispense fair and just ruling, to bear witness to courage and compassion, but the boy who had shown so much promise with a heart full of love was punished for spreading Agni’s will.
He forfeited the fight in the ring, but Agni refused to allow its child to fail the fight for his life. Intermingling its spirit with the boy’s flickering soul before the fire could fizzle out and die, he breathed new life into the child and sculpted his fire to be just and righteous. His flames would do no harm, his hands would take no lives, and his heart would grow warm once more with time.
For this was Agni’s will.

One day General How and his men came upon an injured teenage refugee collapsed on the side of the road beside his ostrich horse. How had taken the boy in to be cared for at the Ba Sing Se Military Hospital out of an obligation to help the child, only to find himself quickly considering the fact the lone boy is without a caretaker or parent to see to his recovery. Still uncertain of whether this role will be a temporary one until the boy is back on his feet, How discovers young Li has suffered a terrible head injury that resulted in total memory loss. With only the traveling documents on his person to confirm his name, How takes it upon himself to formally adopt and raise the young man as his own.
Unbeknownst to How, raising a teenager with a clean slate comes with its own obstacles as he juggles the dark impressions of Li's past trauma, unexpected firebending, teenager romance, Li's awkward yet charming shyness, rebellious outbursts and Li's habit of picking up strays, of both the furry and water tribe variety. Parenting was its own battlefield, as How soon discovers.

It was just another way his mind was trying to drive him into greater peril. He still had his inner flame; he could still feel the sun. He was a firebender.
Zuko must now face the trials that come with being alive as well as tackling the most important question; Why is he alive?

"Are you..." Zuko rasps out and the man instantly snaps his mouth shut - finally stopping his hysteric rambling with it. He must be surprised that Zuko is coherent enough to say anything at all and he leans forward to fully capture the rest of Zuko's slurred words. "... trying to hit on me while I'm bleeding out on your carpet?"
The man gives him a bewildered look. "... I have hardwood floors. That's a towel."
___Or: Zuko tries to find ways to deal with his fucked up life - like knitting, smoking, being an asshole in general, moonlighting as a vigilante - you know, regular stuff - he just never accounted for meeting Sokka.

when Hakodas crew gets shipwrecked on a small island just out of fire nation waters everyone assumed they were alone on the island. that was until Hakoda made an alarming discovery on the other inhibitor here. very quickly the crew realized that they cant just leave a kid alone on the island and try to do something about it. all the while their elusive new friend is just trying to dig up what he had left behind of his life and why he was on the island in the first place.
