Mark has a bad habit of trying to save people, and he learned the hard way that such actions lead to one-sided relationships where he’s the only one left hurt and alone. After a year of discovering how to be happy by himself, the white knight in him flares up once more after coming across an abused homeless man in the park. He really shouldn’t take home an unknown, possible mutant who is clearly willing to trade sexual favors for food, but winter is blowing into NYC and Mark’s old habits never truly left him.
Mark tells himself everything will turn out fine. After all, he’s just being a decent person and helping out how he can. It’s not like he’s going to fall in love with the stranger he let into his home just because he wants to feel needed, right? Maybe he really does need a therapist.
(This can be read as an original standalone fic, but it is technically part of the Marvel universe because mutants exist.)

He saw what he had expected: fear mostly and pain of course, the raw emotions of any wounded animal. But there was something there that surprised him. It wasn't courage exactly, somehow that was the wrong word for it. Discipline. Some kind of tenacious inner strength that was unusual in someone so young. This was a girl who exerted an enormous amount of control over herself. All of it working overtime not to panic.
And yet, at the same time, she looked so impossibly fragile. Her wide blue eyes were so open, the fear so close to the surface it seemed like he could touch it if he were a bit closer. There were no walls up at all, no hint that she knew she should try not to look so much like prey. And the grip she had on herself, cost her dearly. Something inside of her seemed to be burning far too hot. Flames licking the feet of some virgin martyr.

They were camping outside of the Quartz Hills in the Yellow Pass when Jasper heard the cheer go up. He stopped mid-rub of Fancy, and put down the brush. Jasper headed towards the source of the rising sound, the light of the fires throughout the camp glinting off of the wagons and casting the camp in half-shadow. Up in the mountains, the sun made its way down early, but there seemed to be an extra chill in the air as Jasper hurried through wagons and erected tents, past dinners half-way to cooked on spider pans, the smell of green beans, bacon and bread baking strong enough to make Jasper’s stomach rumble.
He emerged out of the maze of the encampment next to the large fire designating the center of camp. He’d come late, apparently, arriving to a circle of men, women and children, their voices clashing together in triumph and jeers that made Jasper wary. Jasper’s sister, Mattie, stood near the edge of the circle and caught his eye, shaking her head once. Jasper ignored her and pushed his way to the inside of the circle where three men were tying up a skinny, unkempt boy.
