He may have a hard time focusing, but his memory is great, and he can easily remember small details if he thinks about them long enough.
Donnie had called it photogenic memory before April tore him apart. Or was it photographic?
Maybe Mikey will ask him about it, now that he's come back.
Or, after The Power Inside Her, April can't bring Donnie back. However, Mikey starts to see his brother around as if he never left. If it looks like Donnie and sounds like Donnie, it must be him.

Though the camera doesn’t catch it, Joyce and Jonathan exchange an amused look over the rearview.
Then, the footage splices, rapidly cutting through various points in life—Will and Mike’s first time hanging out at the Byers’; Mike coming over for Will’s birthday; Will coming over for Mike’s. Flashes of middle school that stretched into those final days before they left for Lenora. High school, graduation, moving day—the clips start blurring into one another as more pop up, but it stops on a clip of Mike and Will, probably around six years old, giggling as they try to handle the camera.
“We’ll see about forever, honey.”
(or, the one where jonathan byers has a lot of stocked up video footage from when mike and will were kids, and decides that the best time to reveal them is during his best man speech at their wedding.)

When Will gingerly peels the birthday card open, Mike’s uneven handwriting is displayed across the page.
The p’s in happy are backwards, the y wobbly and curled at the end, and the k in Mike is also flipped the wrong way. The word birthday is etched in their kindergarten teacher’s steady print, and it seems like she'd also added the punctuation for him.

Mike’s chest tightens. “I couldn’t-”
“I get it, okay?” Lucas cuts him off, louder now. “You think I don’t get it? He was your best friend. He was mine, too. I love him too. I miss him too.” Mike opens his mouth, but nothing comes out, throat burning. “And- I’m sick of this,” Lucas keeps going, voice rising, cracking around the edges. “I’m sick of you acting like he’s just- what- out there somewhere? Hiding? Waiting for you to come find him from some evil dimension?” He shakes his head, sharp and disbelieving. “That’s not how this works. That’s not how any of this works.”
or, a Will was never found au taking place during season four, where Mike is the only one who can see Will when Will flicks through the slides.

Will’s eyes flicked to Lucas. His eyebrows were high up on his forehead, eyes widened, and he shifted up a little straighter, like he was intrigued. Like he knew what was coming, and was bracing for it.
“And— and it’s like… shit, it’s like— kind of awful, y’know? Um. To figure out. The thing’s not awful. Well— maybe. Probably. Possibly? You guys might think so. My dad thinks so. I kind of think so? Uh. Well. Not as much. Not anymore?” His shuddering hand gestured outwards, pointing at nothing, a wide gesticulation of no substance or meaning beyond nervous habit. Mike sucked in another harsh breath. “And it’s like… this— this massive thing. Like, life-changing. It’s kind of re-contextualised my whole life, actually. Like I’ve suddenly switched D&D classes, or something.”

Will scoffs, stepping closer to inspect the titles.

A sharp crack tears through the air. Mike flinches back, staring down at Will's lifeless body. He gets one last look before the ground is giving way beneath them, and all at once, they’re falling.
A shrill cry tears from Mike’s throat as he finds himself flailing through the open sky. A sharp crack of lightning shutters in the distance. Will's limp corpse contorts, dropping faster than he can. He’s screaming, unimaginable terror ripping through his body. He writhes, reaching for Will, crying the boy's name.
He’s falling, plummeting through a destabilized upside down and there's nothing he can do to stop it. He’s going to die.
Mike reaches out, eyes squeezed close. He tears the watch from Will's wrist, seconds before colliding with the Exotic Matter.

OR
Colliding with Exotic matter as the Upside Down collapses in on itself sends Mike hurtling through time. He’s given the chance to save Will before any of this starts.
But he can’t seem to get it right. Reliving moments throughout the years, helpless to warn Will. He just wants to keep him safe. Why can’t he keep him safe?
He’ll do this again and again until he gets it right. He won’t lose him again.

Summary
Will takes a moment, hands clenched into fists at his sides, to rest his head against the grain of the wood and close his eyes. Here, with the solid weight of the door to ground him, he evaluates the facts: the war is over, Vecna dead and gone for good this time. Max is awake, reunited with Lucas and El at last, who both rushed to return to their places at her bedside the moment they knew. The rest of his family is upstairs, the rest of his friends alongside them, alive and mostly well and rejoicing in the fact that a years-long nightmare has finally reached its conclusion. It’s a night for togetherness, for celebrating hard-earned victories, for finally looking ahead instead of back over their shoulders.
It’s also a night where Will almost killed Mike.
In the midst of their final stand against Vecna, a possessed Will nearly strangles Mike to death. In the basement bathroom of the Wheeler's house after their victory, Mike and Will confront the aftermath.

Mike’s eyebrows lift slightly. “You noticed?”
“I have eyes.” Will says, matter-of-factly.
There’s the faintest twitch at the corner of Mike’s mouth.
“Show me,” Mike says.
“Show you what?”
“That jump you almost land clean every time.”
Will’s pulse picks up. “Why?”
“Because I want to see it up close.”
OR:
Will Byers wanted to be a figure skater for as long as he could remember. One day in the rink, a paper was posted that said the skaters practice would overlap with the hockey players practice. Now he has to deal with the most annoying person in all of hockey.
