Summary
“If hockey was that important for geopolitics,” María deadpans, leaning across the table to stab another pelmeni with her fork. “The Chinese would’ve gotten into it by now. The Russians want international concessions, and this is a cheap trick to get it. To be completely honest—”
She dunks the pelmeni into her bowl. It almost looks like she’s drowning it when she twists the fork, coating it in fragrant orange soup. It almost looks like it’s a thrashing animal.
“—it’s really annoying me. From a purely tradecraft perspective, from one lawyer to another, it’s a cheap trick,” María continues, pelmeni between her teeth. “Canada isn’t even the country who’s detaining Russian arms dealers. That’s US shit”.
Shane doesn’t say anything. Shane’s looking at the pictures splayed across the table, face-up, and thinking about how if this all ends here, all Shane will have to show people when they ask about Ilya are six mugshots from when he was transferred from the Moscow jail to the Siberian penal colony, where his cheeks are hollowed out and his eyes are vacant.
After attending Svetlana’s uncle’s funeral in Russia, Ilya is arrested, detained, tried and sent to rot in a Siberian penal colony.

Summary
Hauntology (a portmanteau of haunting and ontology, also spectral studies, spectralities, or the spectral turn) is a range of ideas referring to the return or persistence of elements from the social or cultural past, as in the manner of a ghost.
Catalina Cain is divided on whether this is a good definition.
The past is a bodily sensation.
The past is the wound that refuses to heal, yes. But that’s an old, trite way of saying things that’s been said thousands of times—it’s faded and blown out, like a shitty old tattoo. The past is an itch you keep absentmindedly scratching and you keep wondering why the burning is getting worse.
Finnick doesn’t ask her where she’s been, or what she’s done. She eats her croissant—both of them, she eats two croissants—and as she breaks apart crumbly, golden pastry in her thin hands, she brushes the crumbs out of Finnick’s hair, and he sleeps with his head in her lap. Finnick still has large, cavernous wounds born from neglect, where reddened skin gives way to jutting, pale white bone, with yellowed patches of osteomyelitis infection.

Summary
She’s the expert in a dying field, and she can’t do anything about it. She can’t close the door. The room will always exist. It will always be burning, and she will always be slow dancing inside of it. There’s thousands of lines on hundreds of pages. She can’t burn away the evidence. She can’t forget the curve of Seneca’s hard-set jaw when he was thinking hard about something, or how Cinna bit his lip when he concentrated. She can’t forget the exact colour of Aurelia’s hair underneath the summer sun, or her father’s steadying hands.
Catalina Cain outlives a lot of people. Her ghosts keep good company and don’t talk back. And when they do, they’re at least cordial enough to have something interesting to say.

Summary
“Hey! Catalina!” Plutarch calls after her.
She looks over her shoulder, raises her brow. She stops in her steps, but still stretches out a long leg, ready to plunge into the fresh snow.
“I don’t have your number!” Plutarch hollers. “I sort of need that!”
Catalina snorts. Smirks. “You coulda just asked!” she hollers back, because the wind’s howling, and at her heart, she’s still a kid, and it’s fun, and one day she’s going to be dead. Without thinking, she takes a stride forwards.
“Now,” she says. “You’re gunna have to catch me for it! You’re gunna have to earn it!”Catalina's (and Plutarch's) (bitter)sweetest memories. The kind of things that you see when your life flashes before your eyes.

Summary
Catalina Cain, People’s Princess, non-convicted serial killer of socialites, general badass, is leaning against one of her mother’s marble pillars, smoking inside, at one of her mother’s parties. Lydia watches, hidden in the throng of sweaty dancers, as Catalina puts out the cigarette on Plutarch Heavensbee’s sleeve, Plutarch Heavensbee yelping and jumping back, slamming into a waiter that spills red drinks all down his back.
Of course, Lydia huffs to herself. Of course it’s the most unapproachable fucking person at an event where she’d be the height of unapproachable, that you have to approach, right now, right here, at this stupid fucking party.
Lydia Harrow, disaffected socialite, thinks her father might be a Victor. Catalina Cain, after the war, is bored and probably shouldn't get involved. This is the start of a wonderful friendship. And a monopoly on paternity testing.

Summary
Burn Butcher Burn is the story of the Capitol through the eyes of Catalina Cain, who’s a lot of things. Most notably: heiress who lived and died by pretty lies, handmaiden to President Snow’s reign of terror, and the leader of his "engineering" team. She’s also Finnick Odair’s friend, and an integral cog in the rebellion, and atoning. A hand of vengeance, instrument of grace; woman, who remembers fireplace ashes and sparklers stuck into cakes.
AKA: Ashley wanted more Capitol worldbuilding, so goddammit, Ashley's going to provide that.
Burn Butcher Burn and the story of Catalina Cain originally appeared in two different forms: The Rest Of Us Just Are, a short story-type fic from a defunct zine and The Necromancer's Ballad, which appeared on various Discords throughout the year. Sorry if you liked this, because it's changed a good bit! But at least it's longer now? And yes, that is a Witcher reference. And yes, I am mad that they replaced Henry Cavill. Thank you and goodnight!

Summary
A post-Day of Unity examination of what the fuck is happening in the Boiling Isles, as well as the birth of a whole new rebellion, against a whole new nightmare. Mostly character studies, with a little plot simmering throughout them, if you're good at paying attention. Not an epic, like my other series; Girl, Mother, Crone. Which, if you haven't and want to both feel bad for Phillip and want his head on a stick, do check out.
