Summary
When Han Juwon is invited to some sodden village near Jeongyang Swamp, he really considers not going. With the storms setting in, the water will be high and the insects will be many. He can only imagine that everything will be covered in a perpetual layer of muck and grime.
Unfortunately, Lee Dongsik is the one extending the invitation. If it were anyone else, Juwon would have immediately refused without hesitation or remorse. As it is, he does have to wonder why Dongsik imagines that Juwon will be the best companion for his little journey.
It’s always difficult to know what the right thing to do is, when it comes to Dongsik. Some days, he feels like he can do anything and everything if Dongsik is the one asking him to.

Summary
He drops his bag down next to one of the empty chairs and scans the beach to see where everyone else is.
Oh Jihwa is standing ankle-deep in the ocean water alongside Im Sunnyeo, holding out a seashell for the other woman to inspect with a smile. Kang Dosu has little Huimang strapped to his back in a water-safe carrier and appears to be walking along the shore to find more shells for his wife.
Hwang Gwang Young is floating flat on his back atop the waves further out at sea, somewhat impressively. He has expensive sunglasses strapped to his face and seemingly not a care in the world.
Last (but certainly not least) is Han Juwon and his brother a few meters away from each other with shockingly extravagant sandcastles in front of them, manned by little green army men.

Summary
A few days before Dongsik’s sentence officially ends and he returns home once-and-for-all, Juwon snaps on rubber gloves and does the most thorough deep-clean of a house he’s ever done in his life. And that’s saying something.
He knows he’s probably crossing a lot of lines here, but he also can’t stomach the thought of Dongsik finally sorting through his family’s things after everything has been resolved and finding them covered in filth and dust and mold. Even if it makes Dongsik resent him for interfering, this is something that he can do for the man that no one else can do to the same standard.
That is at least one thing Juwon can be proud of. Possibly the only thing.

Summary
It’s only ten minutes later that he stumbles across it-- the old, collapsed Shinto shrine that the elders claim was built by a Japanese immigrant who settled into Manyang almost a century ago. When the man had died, the shrine fell into rot and disrepair, as none but him had ever devoted themself to it.
It always makes Dongsik a little sad to see it, but today of all days, he feels the water of grief welling up inside himself and falls to his knees in front of it. He knows little of Japanese shamanism, but what he does know is that these shrines are places for spirits, and that the veil between himself and the afterlife feels awfully thin right now.
He’s never given much credence to spirituality or religion. Even so, his heart is broken and his mind is tired, and he finds himself praying for the first time in over thirty years.

“When you’re really worked up, you start speaking English. It’s attractive. Especially in bed.” Dongsik says, grinning at the embarrassed look Juwon shoots at him. “I’m curious. I don’t know much English, but you grew up in England. You never talk about it.”
Juwon sits with the question for a moment, staring out the windshield. The reeds are golden in the sunlight, sibilant in the wind. Their pungent scent carries, and Dongsik smiles despite it. He’s grown used to this view, obstructed by Han Juwon. It’s Juwon that he stares at, and it’s Juwon who is the subject of his unending fascination.
