Summary
The rumors started right away.
Nick wasn’t really surprised by it. Charlie was pretty well known throughout the school and his absence would be noticed. Or maybe it was because Nick looked like a kicked puppy throughout the entire school day.
Either way, he first heard some people chatting about it outside class, their whispering voices traveling down the hallway.
“I bet it’s mono,” a guy whose name Nick did not even know said with a snicker.
“But his boyfriend is still here,” the other, whom Nick was sure was named Greg, responded.
“Unless he cheated on him! He does look really sad lately.”
The first few days were the hardest, knowing that Charlie wouldn’t be coming in behind him, or grabbing Nick in the hallway to kiss in an empty classroom. To know he couldn’t lean to the right to whisper something, a joke or an observation. To know he wouldn’t see Charlie’s bright eyes and smile walking past him on the way to another class, just a moment, but one Nick treasured with his entire heart.

“Hey,” Nick says quietly as Charlie’s head pokes through the borrowed jumper. “What do you need right now?”
Charlie doesn't answer right away, and Nick waits him out while slender hands fidget in his lap. “Can you just…drive for a bit?”
